Here's the latest - happy low water boating all!
Lake Mead water elevation is currently at 1167 feet. Projections are for levels to reach 1154 feet by September 2002, dropping to 1147 feet by June of 2003.
Ramp inspections are being conducted daily with repairs made on a continuous basis. Extra staff is on duty during the weekends when traffic is greater. Rangers warn that visitors should show caution at all launch ramps, being alert for holes, mud, silt and debris. As of May 1, 2002 Lake Mead boat launch ramps are in the following conditions:
Lake Mead Marina
Two lanes on the Lake Mead Marina launch ramp are open for launching but this is limited to smaller boats. Maintenance recently cleaned the launch ramp, removing mud and debris but visitors should be alert to changing conditions as lake levels continue to drop.
Overton Beach
Overton launch ramp is open. Be cautious of holes, mud and debris.
Callville Bay
The north side of the ramp is open. Lines may become long because visitors use is restricted to 25% of the ramp.
Echo Bay
Four to five launch lanes are open.
Hemenway Harbor
Four to five launch lanes are open for shallow launching in addition to four to five lanes that are open for deep water launching . Maintenance moved the Hemenway fishing dock out of mud and into deeper water.
Las Vegas Bay
There is no courtesy dock available at this time. The water is very shallow with holes in the launch ramp surface. Maintenance is working on filling the holes.
Temple Bar
Temple Bar Maintenance is monitoring the launch ramp conditions with mud and silt being removed daily. Holes on the asphalt launching area are covered by silt underwater. Barricades are in place marking some of the launching hazards but be alert to new hazards that may not be marked. Smaller vessels, PWCs and fishing boats may launch along the dock.
Deep water launching is marked with a sign pointing to the west side of the ramp. Temple Bar Resort's Pump Out Station dock interferes with vessels larger than 30' attempting to load or launch in this area.
The old launch ramp dock was removed from the launching area last week.
South Cove
According to rangers, launching conditions at South Cove Launch Ramp are changing every day. Silt and mud were removed from the ramp and the dock has been moved into deeper water. The north lane is open and usable.
Navigational Aids
The lighted buoys on Sand Island and North Saddle Island were removed and replaced with lighted structures.
The "flat wake" buoys at Las Vegas Boat Harbor were relocated to better protect the harbor after their breakwater was moved.
