View Full Version : April Poker Run in Havasu
RVRKAOS

I have never done any poker runs, but interested in possibly participating in one. Does anyone know if you need to go really fast to each stop? RVRKAOS has only a 454MPI, and my top speed is 60mph. I don't think she can stay at WOT for 50 miles +, the engine may gernade.
All input would be valued......
A lot of guys go fast, but ask first what other boats like yours are entered.
Honestly, you dont NEED to go fast.
on some of the larger scale runs there is a prize, $$, or trophy to the fastest boats. but most of the ones i've seen locally (mead and havasu) are not that way. in fact, the RRX poker run even states that it's not a race. the same goes for the may 3 event at mohave. it too is not a race. the point is to get the best poker hand at the end of the run. so it wouldn't really matter if you went 20mph or 120mph. i think most of the racing you're hearing about is more for bragging rights than anything else.

Our boat runs low to mid 60's and we always did the "smaller" boat run to stop #2 before running down the lake to stop #1. Even doing that though, you still get the crap beat out of you going down to Havasu Springs. Could not trim all the way out for very long or we would launch big-time! We ran low to medium on the trim and about 50 mph. At the back of the pack though, you'll have boats of similar size and speed so you can have fun playing with them, passing back and forth, etc.
Have fun, bring your kidney belt, and don't stay at the Nautical (the Roach Motel)!!

Rvrkaos, the Spring Heatwave Poker Run in April is NOT a race. However, it is a chance for all the big dogs to get on it for a pretty spectacular show. There are 3 different starts for boats of various speeds. Check out www.extremeboatsmag.com for more details.

nextasex, i have a question that i hope does not ruffle any feathers. i have never done a poker run and have never been involved in a boat club prior to lvhb. how can a club justify the $225 price tag for a poker run? what does the money go to? i read the article in extreme boats and it looks like it would be a blast but i just can't get over the dent in the pocket book. i realize you get a t-shirt, a dinner, etc etc. i'm not baggin' on you or your club/organization. i've just noticed over the last six months that of the several poker runs i've seen advertised they are all at least $200 to enter. can you shed some light on the subject?

rude - The prize money gets larger with the larger entry fee. This draws the "big boys" with the the high dollar offshore rigs into it. Makes for a pretty good show as well as a "wow" factor. The bigger the boats the more prestige to the Poker Run organizers. No "dig" intended...just the facts. I can't attend the Spring Heat Wave as it's always on the same weekend as my annual fishing trip. If it wasn't, I'd be there too. It's a blast from all accounts.

We usually ran 50-55 mph and had constant adjusting on the trim whenever we decided to go over 60. It is quite a washing machine going down the lake, VERY rough.

I did the run last year and ran with a bunch of people, We hauled ass to the first stop then the engines stopped for about 10-15 minutes and the music and beers came out. It was like that at every stop. Plus you get a chance to check the prop. No pressure,Noproblems... I still pulled off 4 of a kind and won a Rockford fosgate amp too.
so in everyones opinion, is it worth the $200+ for the poker runs?http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

In my opinion, no. Why? Because I already buzz around the lakes and party almost every weekend (until this year ) with or without a poker run. However, I'm probably biased right now because every spare dollar is going into my boat and house. I probably would enjoy it if I had a bigger boat (than 21' ) and had a bigger wallet.
i think "bigger wallet" is the key phrase on that one!!

They're fun the first couple of times, then after that it works out to be more fun (for us at least) to go and watch all the kick-butt boats and do our own thing. After watching the first leg of the run we hung out in the channel and went upriver, lot's of fun!

NO!!!!! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
My reason is I don't want to pay that much to get the shit kicked out of me in that rough water. When the runs were a little smaller it was a blast, but now there are to many big boats to make it enjoyable and Janice is freaked out about half the time http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
The nautical is such a shit hole so I won't stay there the food at the runs is known for being terrible(I did here they were going to have it catered this time). So to sum it up save 500 bucks stay at the ramada or someplace cheap go up river and have a blast http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

All in all I'd rather watch! (the poker run that is) The price has gone up, but if you look at what the first AHBA run cost, I think it was $40 to register (AHBA members) $25 for a hand, two shirts were I think, $40, and dinner was $30 for two people. Total, $135. I think the first prize was about $3500. You did have the option to buy the shirts and dinner if you wanted, or you go without the shirts and get dinner in town.
Today it's $175 for a member, but you don't have any options on what you get. You have to pay for the shirts and dinner. First prize will probably be about $5000.
Registration has gone up about 32%. Prize fund for first has gone up about 40% So, the moneys going up on the EBA output and the intake.
After working the first couple of runs I always wanted to run one. But, as stated by a bunch of other folks, it's too rough. I asked about having one of the Havasu runs for boats under 30' but that wasn't received well. Big boats bring in the big sponsors. I'll try and hook up with one of the smaller runs put on by different clubs where there's not as many boats and we can run more then 50 mph!

I did the RRX poker run last year. It was a great time. I think it was $100.00 and that included a shirt & dinner for 2. It was not a race, so you could just cruise from stop, to stop. I look forward to doing that again this year.

Now that seems like more my speed and money. Less expensive, casual, smaller...otherwise I'd rather be a spectator. For some reason, my boat performs much better in rough water when I'm just sitting there with a beer in my hand!!!

you guys have all pretty said what i was thinking. i would be just as happy watching all the $300,000 baots doing 150 to get their next card. trying to take some good pics and video and then going the opposite dircetion after they all go by. the rrx run sounds a bit appealing. COME ON MAY 3RD!!
