View Full Version : Serious help needed!
Guys,
I just undid the cover today and opened up stinky mold factory. I cleaned it out the best I could, but I am too afraid of this happening again.
I have my boat cover on top of a blue, Home Depot cover, but the water just seeps through.
Questions:
Has anyone ever had this happen to them? And, how did you solve the problem?
Are there any indoor storage place around here in socal (Orange County area)?
I know I need to air it out, but I can only leave uncovered for so long.
Help.

Do what I do, keep your boat in someone else's garage.
Sorry, I wish I could be of some real help.
Where do you do all your boating? Maybe there is storage close to where you go out.

THOR-I have a cover that I had custom made for it ($600 4 years ago) that is towable and fit very snug. It is made out of Sunbrella and it breathable. It is tight enough that it doesn't pond and water just sheds right off. If some water does get inside the cover will let breathe and let the moisture out. Works very well. Costly, but works well...NO MILDEW!!! Good luck. I feel for you.

Thor, Kevin is right. The plastic tarps just hold water in. A quality cover will let the boat breath and should eliminate your problem. If you do use the plastic tarps they need to be removed within a few days after the rain to let the boat dry out. Yeah, those "tarps" should be on the outside of the canvas cover too, because they do hold water in. I use a tarp over mine during summer to protect from the sun and wind, but take it off during winter/rainy months.
Another really good canvas cover maker is Mikes Marine Canvasas in Santa Ana (which is VERY close to Wilkes Marine http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ). They have a good selection of different types of fabric you can use. They do a lot of the boats in Newport Harbor, and I'm having them make me a new one very soon.
(949)689-0471 ask for Ken Andrews. I could go with you and we could swing by Wilkes............ what do ya' say bud!!? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thor - Since owning our boat I have stored it with a large dessicant cylinder that I bought from McMaster-Carr. Originally it was stored outdoors but covered in a "boat tent" setup where the boat was enclosed down to the ground but moisture could run under the tent and pool under the trailer. The dessicant cylinder seemed to keep everything bone dry. Now that the boat is stored in Havasu there isn't any problem with moisture.

THOR, I have a sunbrella cover on my boat, but I also use the tarps to cover that. The Sunbrella is black of all colors, so I took to 8' 2x4's and crossed them at about 6' up, and put two bolts through them. This gives a tee pee or a-frame look to them. Then, string a rope from the back to the front, over the cross in the wood, then tie it to the tongue of the trailer. Now, hang your tarp over the top. Because it's pitched, the rain won't collect.
Good luck bud.
Is the dessicant cylinder like a big metal container. Forgive my ignorance, but I am blanking right now.

It's about 18" long by about 6" in diameter and has brown paper covering a perforated metal screen. It can be "re-activated" by placing it in an oven and heating to some temperature (don't remember the specifics). I ordered it from McMaster Carr online for about $30. I can't say that it really works or not but all of the electronic gear I ever buy seems to have one of those little dessicant bags in it so someone much smarter than me must think it does something! I figured it couldn't hurt if the boat is outdoors. I also used to open all of the hatches, seat covers and such to allow air flow.
Well I just purchase a couple of dessicant cylinders to place in the boat. That should help for the future. I cant imagine those things hurting the inside at all. Can you?
Do you place them in hot?

I didn't know if they would "stain" anything if there was any leakage of material so I put them in the open, unfinished "well" in the floor - normal known as the ice chest in the Sterling. No not hot...the oven is only used to "recharge" or dry-out a used dessicant cylinder once it has been used for a while. I never recharged it as we moved the boat into its garage in Havasu. Outside, you might want to dry it out every once in a while. There was an instruction sheet that came with it.
How long would you leave them in there?

What about one of those big bubble things? There was one at the show and I've seen them in the mags but I don't know anybody that actually has one.

Thor,
I feel for ya on the water problem. I figured out why RVRKAOS was full of water, I use 3 blue tarps, two 25 footers, and one to cover the connection between those two that cover the whole boat. The one tarp that covers the connection of the two tarps, it was to short. The water didn't drain off the boat, leading to a pond. What I use though is from overtons. IT's two poles that retract to a selected height, you pop up your canvas cover, and on top of your canvas cover is the tarps. When the rain comes down, its like an umbrella. I have one in the front, and one between the driver and shot gun seat. The concept works, it cost me 30 bucks, and I am replacing the tarp that is too short. I have lasted many storms in the past, this is the first that I had a flood. That's what I get for piecing tarps together at the last minute. My last one had ripped from the sun, that why I replaced the top tarp recently. I also suggest you get some mildew remover quick, otherwise your white interior will have yellow stains http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif
Good luck, we should have dry weather for a week or so! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

In the boat? Until the next time out. In the oven? I don't remember what the instructions said...

Stop using those crappy tarps. Try using some thing more like painters plastic. Get the good stuff like 6 mil thick think you can get like a 10'x50' roll for around $20-$30 and it is non pourus like those tarps. You still need to build some sort of support for it but I think this works better than tarps. Works for me, as long as I remember to put it on, yes I left it off before this last big rain we had. Stupid me. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Oh and use some lil clip things on the edge and a few bungies to hold it down. This way you will avoid they dampness from the ground also. Just enough to cover the top.

I saw those inflatable "bubbles" at the L.A. Boat Show on Sunday. They looked pretty neat but only offered a 1 year guarantee. Seemed like a lot of money spent for so little of a guarantee. Most plastics - even with UV inhibitors - degrade in sunlight and constant sun or even reflected sun will cause degradation to the bubble.
