We left for Glamis on Friday morning. We stopped off at the market to get some final things, food, ice, firewood. My buddy notices the hitch he is using had to much of a drop. We stop and unhook the trailer and swap the hitch to one of the other ones. As we connected the trailer to the hith the wires got snagged. We hook up the trailer. Looks good, nice and level. We test the lights and notice they are not working. We figured when it snagged one of the wires came loose. We go through and fix the wiring. All good and were off. We arrive in Glamis 3 1/2 hours later. We rented a travel trailer from Camp n stuff (something like that). We called them and told them we were here so they could deliver the trailer. They come and drop off the trailer. It takes them 3 hours to get it setup. The trailer rolled off the blocks twice and came within inches of my buddies diesel pusher both times. :eek3: They finally get the trailer all set on the blocks. Since we can't unload our stuff into the trailer, we decide we will unload my buddies Buckshot Sandrail and head over to the drags. We head to the drags and make some runs. This was my first time in a rail, let alone, one that has 800 hp. I was a little nervous and wasn't sure what to expect. My nervousness went away once we started to go. My buddy has been driving rails for over 8 years, so I was confident in his driving ability. We hit some jumps etc. Definitely a great experience and I felt really comfortable.
We get back from the drags and decide we are going to park the buggie and bikes and get drunk. No more riding. All is good and we party the night away. Later in the night we have a guy come over on a rhino from another campground asking if we saw a small dog running around. We tell him, no haven't seen a dog but we'll keep our eyes open. Three minutes later a guy happens to pull up in a rail asking if we were missing a dog cause one was running around about 100 yards from our camp. To make a long story short we help this guy get his taco bell dog back. That thing was fast as hell.
The next morning we wake up and had the day planned out. My buddy was going to take us around in the rail and show us Glamis. In the meantime, it is his fiances second time out in the car. The first time she was out she was scared shitless. So, my buddy isn't pushing the car to it's potential. We were all having a great time. We leave at about 11 am for the tour. At time's we hit speeds in excess of 100 mph. Our average speed was about 55-60 mph heading down sand highway. We stop and offer help to some other standed peeps along the way. We finally get to where all the vendors are and buy a few things. Now we are off to Oldsmobile Hill. We all get buckled in the car, and head off. We are crusing at about 30 mph through some small dunes since there was a lot of people all over the place. We come off a small dune and it is a 10 foot drop straight down (I think it is called a witches back or something like that). We didn't have enough speed, since we were just cruising, and the car went down head first. All the weight of the car came down on the front passenger tire (I was the front seat passenger). We hit hard, the front end bounces up towards the sky, and kinda sling shots the backend of the car to the ground. The impact was pretty hard. His fiance was sitting behind me and my girlfriend was sitting behind my buddy who is driving. After the impact, she starts screaming to stop the car. He stops immediately. She is yelling for us to get her out of the car and her back is hurting her. We tried to get her to not move but she wanted out. We helped her out of the car. She is in pain, but no tears. I am thinking she may have pulled a muscle in her back. We still take pre-cautions not knowing what is wrong. After we get out of the buggie, we notice the radiators are leaking. We call one our buddies who had come up that morning who had his truck and was at Olds waiting for us, to come back since we have two busted radiators and my buddies fiance is hurt. They come over and we load her into my buddies truck. He takes off headed for the EMT station at Glamis. They tell him to take her to the hospital in town. They take her and off they go to the hospital. Now, it is my buddy with the buggie, me and my girlfriend. We try adding water to the radiators but it just leaks out. We baby the buggie back to where the vendors are but still 13 miles from our camp. We get a hold of another friend that is up there and he comes and picks us up and takes us to our camp to get the truck and trailer so we could load the car. My buddy with the buggie is stressing out. His mind was everywhere and he was just trying to get the buggie on the trailer and head into town to check on his fiance. In the meantime, while we are loading the trailer we realize there are no trailer brakes. We tinker with the trailer for about an hour. We get a call from our friend who took his fiance to the hospital that she has broken her back. At this time, my buddy was a wreck. We couldn't figure out what was wrong with the trailer brakes, so we leave for the hospital and I follow him into town. I told him we'll figure it out once we get to the hospital. We find out she needs to be airlifted to San Diego for a specialist to see the extent of the damage to her broken back.
This was a freak accident. We can't understand why she was the only one who got seriously hurt. The impact was hard. My girlfriend and I have sore backs, but we are fine. I feel bad for my buddy as he was really taking it easy with her in the car so that she will want to come back. Now, she will never get in that buggie again. I don't know if I would either if I was in her shoes. If we were doing 50-60 mph we would have just launched off it and cleared it. But, because he was being cautious, she got hurt. It just doesn't make sense. :dunno:
This isn't a cheap buggie either. This is a top of the line car, with all the safety features.
