ok, the boats runnin' again and spring is here. i'm looking to upgrade the stereo in the boat. i don't want some giant system. just something that will play cd's and my ipod. i do have a couple of amps laying around but don't know if i should use them or not. i also want to install 4 fans w/ switches inder the deck. even considering a dvd player for the littl'un. i thought there was someone in the club here that was plenty capable of doing this type of project but i cant remember who. i don't have any idea what something like this would cost or how involved this project is. I NEED SOME ADVICE PLEASE.

I think KC is the Master Stereo Installer.

after looking at the dash pic of your boat, i'm thinking it's probably easier to pilot your plane than your boat :)

Hey James. Sounds like you're on your way. I just received one amp from Fed Ex today. My new head unit, speakers, batt switch and circuit breaker are due in later this week.

I also wanted a head unit with Ipod capability, and went with the Alpine CDA-9857. Got it for $280 shipped off Ebay. It will run a changer, but I picked this one because it will do XM and has an Ipod connector. I plan to use the Ipod instead of a changer.

I also ordered 2 pair of Memphis Audio marine series 8" coaxial speakers. I am going to put these in the locations where the 1980's junker stuff is now. :) That means two up front under the front jump seats, and two in the bottom of the console. Eventually, I plan to double this quantity. These were 165/pair, shipped. They also make 6x9's and 6.5" rounds, but if you have the room, typically the bigger driver will reproduce the lower freqs better.

As I said, just got the amp today. I decided on a Hifonics Zeus Zxi-6406. It's 85x4 @ 4 ohm, or 170x4 @ 2ohm. So for now, each speaker will get 85w, and when I double up, then all 8 will get the same power by dropping the load to 2 ohms. I paid $190 shipped for this, also off Ebay.

Not the highest-end stuff, but it's bang for the buck. I will later add subs and a dedicated sub amp, but don't have the funds right now. Hope to start installing it all this weekend.

Much easier..:D However, although my wiring system might sounds complex, the idea is actually to make as much automation as I can and as simple as possible to operate..

i'm still in the "what do i want" stage. i don't know that i want to go the big subwoofer route. i'm not sure where they would go? the mrs. doesn't really care either way. i just want something we can listen to while we're in the boat. it has 4 speakers now which i assume are going to be 6.5" rounds. when the stereo works, it sounds ok. i would probably be happy with just upgrading the speakers, head unit and installing the other stuff i mentioned (at least for now). my other problem is going to be locating the head unit. i won't put it back in it's current location. the way it's installed right now, it's about 8 stitches waiting to happen. i should probably look at adding another battery since i'll be adding fans that will run all night. and that means adding another battery switch. this seems to be getting more and more expensive

Why dont you just buy my carrera? It has a kickass stereo with 2 10's. Has ac so no need for them fans and it alread has two of the bigest marine batts you can buy. Also has a honda eu 2000 gen to run the ac and charge the batts. I might even consider a partial trade in plus cash deal on your eliminator. (I think u would not have to come up with two much cash to make up the diff) Let me know :D Plus it already has the two fans in it just incase u get to cold with the ac u can run them instead:poke_eye:

Hey Keith........Why did you go with the Memphis instead of the Resonant Engineering?

STV_Keith

Actually, I didn't. The RE's will be the subs. The Memphis Audio's are the mids/highs. The 8" I speak of is a coaxial speaker. 8" round mid/mid-bass driver with a separate tweeter.

Which ones did you get? I'm assuming RE or SE series? You will like them...they pound hard!

I ended up getting the SE series rated at 600 watts rms.
