View Full Version : What would YOU like to see?

Question for you members out there - what would YOU like to see on LVHB (not JUST the forum, but the whole site) that would make the site better?
What is it about hotboat (besides the mag) and OSO that makes them high traffic sites? Are there extra forum topics that could be added? A place to post your boat pics or gallery type thing? What do you think would add to the site that would pick up traffic in 2007?
Just curious if any of you have any thoughts on the matter. I've been kicking around having the site redesigned for some time and don't know for sure if I'll do it, but if I do I want to add in as many "cool features" that you all want as I can!
Thanks for the input,
G

An updated gallery with member's boats. Link to the regatta photos at Mead www.jtinc.com
Maybe a "tech" article from TroubleMaker on building motors and a "tech" article from PH on how to blow motors (btw--we missed ya for your 3 month disappearance) http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Maybe even a build section where "new boat builds" can be archieved and posted.
A tow vehicle section for rigs and photos http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Just a few things I thought of!

An updated members gallery would be nice, especially if the members can change their own picture but I know from a technological standpint that may present some limitations. I'd like to see the search function work properly.

I agree with HD....really need to get something that has a good "search" function, or at least one that works. Roln20's had some really good suggestions, as well. I think the member gallery would be great. That way, each member could update their own gallery and keep it current. That would really help for those that have a new boat every other month....2FORCEFULL, HD/HH, M2ME just to name a few. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif I know that vbulletin has some good capabilities for that kind of stuff.
IMO, I don't know if we will ever be like OSO or HB (not that I would want this place to be like those) only because we have limited ourselves to pretty much one geographical area, especially with the name. I don't think that is a bad thing, I kind of like the small group feel of this site. I would just like to see more daily involvement from more peeps on the board. I know that everyone leads a busy life and that during the winter we aren't thinking much about boating (except for me, I think about it all day long) but it would be nice to see interaction and discussions.

Some good suggestions from roln, I kinda like the gallery part too.
While I think it's limited geographically I don't think that means much because topics here cover everything from catalina runs to powell trips. If you look at it that way LV is the center vs. the fringe http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
We'll see if we can't get a bunch of good ideas and incorporate them into an 07 LVHB site.

The differance in those sites:
1-They stay on the topic.
2-And don't have ads for someone selling something and hijack some one's thread.

Now that I think of it the search function has never worked.

I know it's a boating site, but how about a off road section for the peeps with rails, quads & sand/dirt toys to post on?
As far as increasing traffic, here's my .02.
This is a very cool site, lots of great peeps. The hard part of increased traffic is you need to be careful what you wish for. With increased traffic, you get increased drama. For some here, that is a huge problem and thats why people bash HB, yet I see most of the peeps here, there also. Me, I like the drama, it's entertaining. If I want to avoid it, it's really not hard, just don't open the drama threads or don't read them.
It is tough, there are many off shoots from HB, RRL, HD's, ISL, RRX, etc.... They're all great sites, there is just so much you can say and I don't see repeating myself on every different forum when most end up at HB anyways.

First off,
you should welcome new members and encorage them to post, a lot more "glad you are here" and a lot less "Why are you here
Next fire the spam and drama cops!
no one likes to be treated rudely, if some one makes a mistake simply deleate their post follow up by a PM telling them what they did wrong. don't let all the members tar and feather them and think they are going to try to get others to join!
next decide what your site will be known for
right now it has the rep. as a site controlled by a few that
dosen't want new members.
pick your moderaters and have them and them only police!
the rest of the members can read and post on a thread of there choice, for instance there was a post where they were clown'n dodge trucks, I have a dodge, thought it was funny and joined in, had I been offended I could have just went to a different post.
next you need a spam network, everyone does something here or knows someone that can help when in need. maybe a business sign in with a phone number. most people don't want it free that just don't want to be ripped.
there is a lot of dual sport boaters that go to the dunes in the off season, maybe " sand toys and events" http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/chin_scratch.gif

2forcefull - I'm not challenging but curious, where do you get this (or what makes you think this I guess is a better way to say it)?
"and a lot less "Why are you here?""
I don't really feel there's a why are you here attitude towards new people so I'm curious what is it that's driving that because if that's the case then it needs to be fixed so I'd like to know what's causing that.
and this
"right now it has the rep. as a site controlled by a few that
dosen't want new members."
Once again just curious how the site got that rep and where that feeling about the site is promoted.
I for one want to encourage new people, visitors, members, etc. hence the reason for the particular "how to make it better" type of post. I think most other members do also. So I'm curious how that happend (if it's a particular person or a few people or what?). I definitely don't think the group of moderators feel that way (in fact what promted this thread was an exchange between moderators) - in fact I can speak for them all in our discussions behind the scene we're trying to make this site better and better and encourage new members to participate etc.
As far as the spam network - that's the "lvhb marketing group" - I just called it something different. Members are more than welcome to promote their services or products etc. there. That's a great suggestion (beat you to it bud!http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rollinglaugh.gif
I think the off road section is a gimme! I love that idea! I know other former LVHB'ers who would be back on here after they've sold their boats and gone to the sand. I knew this thread would create some great discussion and that is an awesome idea.
As far as firing the spam and drama cops - help me out with that one - what do you mean? Spam should be in the classified section for stuff for sale and services and other products in the LVHB Marketing Group section - so I'm not sure what else there is to police on that one. As far as drama cops - I'm not sure what you mean? We put a pretty simple set of board rules together - do you mean get rid of that - I don't think that's what you mean based on our PM exchange last week.
The whole point of this thread is to make the site a thousand times better for the upcoming year. It will be five years and I think it's due to make some improvements like the section for off road and stuff. We certainly want it friendly to new members so if there's other stuff we can do to promote that I'm ALL EARS!
Thanks for the input!

next you need a spam network, everyone does something here or knows someone that can help when in need. maybe a business sign in with a phone number. most people don't want it free that just don't want to be ripped.
there is a lot of dual sport boaters that go to the dunes in the off season, maybe " sand toys and events" http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/chin_scratch.gif
<span id='postcolor'>
2forcefull - I'm not challenging but curious, where do you get this (or what makes you think this I guess is a better way to say it)?
"and a lot less Â*"Why are you here?""
Â*I think most other members do also. Â*So I'm curious how that happend (if it's a particular person or a few people or what?). Â*I definitely don't think the group of moderators feel that way (in fact what promted this thread was an exchange between moderators) - in fact I can speak for them all in our discussions behind the scene we're trying to make this site better and better and encourage new members to participate etc.
As far as the spam network - that's the "lvhb marketing group" - I just called it something different. Â*Members are more than welcome to promote their services or products etc. there. Â*That's a great suggestion (beat you to it bud!http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rollinglaugh.gif
I think the off road section is a gimme! Â*I love that idea! Â*I know other former LVHB'ers who would be back on here after they've sold their boats and gone to the sand. Â*I knew this thread would create some great discussion and that is an awesome idea.
As far as firing the spam and drama cops - help me out with that one - what do you Â*mean? Â*Spam should be in the classified section for stuff for sale and services and other products in the LVHB Marketing Group section - so I'm not sure what else there is to police on that one. Â*As far as drama cops - I'm not sure what you mean? Â*We put a pretty simple set of board rules together - do you mean get rid of that - I don't think that's what you mean based on our PM exchange last week.
The whole point of this thread is to make the site a thousand times better for the upcoming year. Â*It will be five years and I think it's due to make some improvements like the section for off road and stuff. Â*We certainly want it friendly to new members so if there's other stuff we can do to promote that I'm ALL EARS!
Thanks for the input!

I like the small town atmoshere on this board. I think what sets this one off from the others is that the members "know" each other. Well at least most do.
Improvement. A gallery for sure. I dont have a "real boat" but I would still like to have a place to show it off for those that know what boating is all about.
The offroad section sounds cool as well. Some of those Rhinos, Jeeps and things are pretty cool.
A tech section would also be nice.
I dont think we have to slice it up to damn much. Just add a few catagories <<<(the spelling doesnt look right to me) so the topics can be broader. As long as there is not a engine section, drive section, fiberglass sectoin. THat is ALL tech. A few site have gotten WAY out of hand with the splittin hairs on topics of discussion.
I like the smilies. They are cool.
More detailed map section. Maybe a yahoo beta maps type thing where you can find more people on this board. Hey I am going to be Here X marks the spot type of thing.
I happen to like this place and the people that I have met. I think that is why most are guarded about others that come on here and spam on the 1st post. It is like we are being used or something. To me it seems like some of the Unwelcoming committee don't really post much anymore if at all.
I would like to see it stay that way.
If someone post's spam on the first post, look it as an opportunity to get someone new on the board posting rather than an insult.
If someone post's spam in the wrong section, give a suggestion on a better place to put it wrather than flaming the person to immediately put them on the defensive.
At least a spam post is something to read rather than one of the 600+ lurkers on the site that have never posted yet......

I didn't realize there was an unwelcoming committee but I've heard that from a few people. The board is and should be a friendly place for people to discuss boating and related (thanks for the sand suggestion) toys - if it wasn't originally then we all wouldn't have met.
There's no reason for anyone to be "unwelcomed" unless someone posts something deserving of it (i.e. breaking the rules). Anyone deserving of being unwelcomed will be dutifully done so by the moderator group (or at least that's the way it should happen).
The good thing is there's a crew of moderators now sharing the load, so hopefully spam that needs to be moved and threads that aren't good for the board or it's members can be discussed and handled if necessary. Kevin did an awesome job but it just makes more sense to have a team of a few people chime in so it's not just one perspective. I know it's a good group.
We do have too many lurkers - how do we "coax" them out?

i think outcole'd has a very good point about the folks that use spam as their first post. Â*we've had a few cases in the past of people being dealt with pretty harshly for spamming on the first post. Â*the problem with that kind of first post is that the person rarely seems to come back and do any further posting. Â*they put the spam up and disappear. Â*that could be because of the backlash or just because they were looking for a free ad. Â*if those ads could simply be moved to the proper area and leave it at that, maybe it would help to get rid of the negative image (if indeed there is one) for this board.
i love the ideas roln suggested, the offroad section is excellent along with the tech section (of course i would be a big contributor to this section http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif ).
part of the difference between us, HB and OSO is both of the other boards have been around longer. Â*OSO is labeled as a coast to coast board and has a large number of manufacturers and distributors that advertise there. Â*along with the advertisements, some of them participate in the forum discussions. Â*they also have two sections that only advertisers can post in. Â*OSO also has a "company" boat and motorhome that travels the country going to races and poker runs. it has different levels of membership which require $$. so there are a large number of differences between this one and OSO.

NO - that's not what I'm saying http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/asshole2.gif
- moreso that there's more power in numbers and with 5 of us speaking with one voice it just makes more sense. I get the impression that you were a bit unfairly targeted in some instances simply because it was just you - but if it had always been 5 of us I don't think it would have happened like that. It's harder to disagree and get pissed if 5 moderators agree there is an issue than if there is one - so in a round about way I'm saying the burden you had on your shoulders was unfair and too big!

I think you may hear from some people that this indeed is a problem and that other boaters feel this is a tough board to get involved in - which definitely needs to be corrected - I know none of us want it that way. Â*Like you - pretty much all of our friends - good friends - are from the board going back to nearly when I started it in 2002. Â*So it can't be that "unfriendly" or we all wouldn't have met through the site. Adding to that is all of the people I hope to meet up with on the lake WHEN I ACTUALLY GET A BOAT!
The stuff we (2ForceFull and I) talked about James has mostly been covered already in this thread - I just got a better sense of it from talking to him directly.
I think the rules will go a long way towards keeping this place friendly and I definitely think a few additions to the site will give it a fresh look and feel - hopefully getting some of the lurkers out of the "lurking status" http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumb.gif

It's 5 o'clock somewhere!
I'm guilty of getting on a few peeps for spamming in their first post in the past. But that is where it is at, in the past.
<span id='postcolor'>
ditto here! I just don't understand how someone can expect to sell their boat or ? when they just list it and don't stick around to answer questions about it etc. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/chin_scratch.gif
Nonetheless - I'll be more careful of that too. Comments I've made are more from the standpoint of "why don't you stick around and have some fun!" than they are "get off the board because you just spam!". Sometimes you can think how you want to say things and type them and they come out to a visitor is totally different or can have alternate "tones" so to speak.
I know we all agree we want people to stick around though that's a gimme!

Well I like the smalll town feel to this site. Some sites I have visited are pretty small town feel but also seem like you have to be in the click of the handull of people that post the most to contribute. If your trying to build a better site that makes it more popular that become full of adds and other crap to slow it down to a crawl I don't think that is appealing either.
A forum for jokes.
Videos are very popular right now, how about a place for them.

You're right - there's almost a fine line to walk between too big and not big enough. I don't want a bunch of ads on the site - but to be honest I would like to have the site make a little bit more money than it has for a lot of reasons (upgrading the forum, poker run funding, etc.) so to do that we need a bit broader audience.
I like your ideas, but instead of just a forum for jokes - how about a "General" forum - for example politics, jokes, current events, etc. - I see those topics getting a lot of play on other sites.
We had the LVHB regatta video on the site for a while - in fact it's still on the server somewhere - it was VERY cool! But once again for stuff like that you have to be able to afford the bandwidth because that stuff soaks it up!
Good ideas ndawind! (I always feel like you're boat is coming to eat me when I see the avatar http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/eek3.gif - my kids thought it was hilarious - and NO that's not a slam http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumb.gif )
