Things were actually not bad.. The lower level is starting to hurt the Public launch ramp at Antelope. There is only one lane open on it and they are suggesting that you don't launch anything bigger than a 22 ft boat.
The forecasts are still pretty good for the year. Looking forward to running with everyone up this way.

9psi does seem a little bit much especially at 4500rpms. Â*Seems like you should be around 6-8 pounds and that's only if your over 5000rpms. Â*Maybe your tachometer is off...if you was at full throttle, 4500rpms is to slow. Â*Do those engines use the B&M blower? Â*Are they intercooled? Â*Can you post a pic? The only real thing I know about blower motors is that you better get your check book out....especially if you really are running 9psi of boost...

The boat looks good! What's up with that oil pressure? under 40# running 4500RPM's, it should be in the 60#+ area.

They are B&M blowers...
At idle, the boost is showing between -2 and 0 lbs boost. 3200 rpms is showing 2.5- 3 lbs lbs of boost. They are not intercooled.
As far as the Tach goes,, not sure if it's off or not.. idle is about 800 rpms
Trouble Maker
04-03-2006, 12:23 PM
How many hours do they have on them?
Did you have a compression check done on them?
If your only getting 4500rpms at full-throttle and your boost is actually 9psi I would say something is wrong...or going to be wrong very soon....
My 468cu with a 420 B&M wouldn't even start to build boost until it was coming over 4100rpms, and topped out at around 6-7 pounds at 5200rpms...it was an efficient engine and it wasn't until the rpms came way up that the engine couldn't keep up with the blower...which is what causes the boost pressure to increase to begin with.

I'm curious if the boost gauges are hooked up right. I shouldn't be getting a negative number at all on them. Perhaps hooked up as a Vacuumm gauge?
burtandnancy
04-03-2006, 04:13 PM
Sure you can vacuum at low, no load rpm's. You won't go into boost until the rpm's come up and motors start to build horsepower which depends on a lot of things; cam profile, pully sizes, size of blowers, lots of variables. How many pounds of boost did you see at 5000, 5200, etc?
mardonzi
04-03-2006, 04:34 PM
You're right about the vaccuum. I'm still in the learning stages on the Blower boat thing.
As far as other RPM's, I never took it above 4500 rpms,,, so I'm not sure what the readings will be. Â*Trying to get hold of the previous owner to find out what he had it set for. Â*The boat was supposedly set up to run at Powell (3500 ft) so we will see.
If I remember right 600Sc is a "twin screw" type of sc. If so, the full boost starts around 2000rpms and is steady to you hit the limiter. Was that the case?
mardonzi
04-03-2006, 05:57 PM
OK,, I just got off the phone with Bob Teague about this whole ordeal... Emailed him a pic of the motor and this is what we've come up with.
Evidently, the motors were built by a guy by the name of Joey Griffen. Some serious thought and cash went into this.
It's been converted from the stock 10 Rib belt and pullies to 16 Rib,, Installed PFM 800 idlers.
The only thing they missed was the installation of the Intercoolers.
So it's either change out the pullies or put on intercoolers....
Decisions, decisions........

If you have enough room in your engine bay go for the coolers, you can pick up another 60-80hp per engine, or run a lower boost and get the same hp you have now. Thing about adding or taking things away from a blower motor is that it is alway best to Dyno it to make sure your EGT's and everything is still set up correctly....

With the pictures that were on the post, take note of the Oil Temp... It's barely running 145, even at the high boost numbers. Between the combination of that and the fact that I'm running avgas, I should be ok for shorter periods of time.
Running an intercooler will prolong the engine life, give me more hp without having to run the high boost numbers, and give me piece of mind...
Running a different pulley setup will give me the same thing, except the HP. I will still be faster than the rest of you guys,,, and will still be able to run pump gas (91 Octane) not to mention that I get to keep my wife happy....

I'm not playing anymore.
The intercoolers cost more than just the coolers.
Hatch
Pressure relief valves
AN fittings and hose
Blingy transom dumps
Re-do fuel lines
Longer belt
And god knows what else
I still wouldnt run pump gas from the dock at 9+ lbs boost with intercoolers anyway.
That $70K Cig is looking better and better now isn't it Don? You'll have over $100K in this one by June http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smashfreak.gif

Hey,, as long as I look better than you out on the water with my 32 ft boat,, life is good...
I'm just going for a pulley change... cheapest, easiest... thing to do. If anything major is going to get done, it'll be a winter project.
Deez,, you broken anything since I talked to you last???
