View Full Version : Conductive epoxy? Car guys?

The rear window defogger on my truck is not working as the tab has fallen off of the window. I took it to an auto glass place and they couldn't solder it back on(he tried but failed). I then soldered it back on, but it only lasted a week.
What do the dealers use to reattach these? Solder doesn't seem to be cutting it, so I am thinking some sort of conductive super glue or epoxy would work? Anyone have any experience/ideas on where to get some or what I should use? I bought a defogger repair kit the other day, but all it really is is a line repair kit and has nothing for gluing the tab back on.
Thanks.

is this on your Yukon Adam?
When we've had this happen before the only solution we found to work was to replace the back glass http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Yes it's on the Yukon... Ouch... Sounds like an expensive repair for a stupid metal tab. While I got you reading this, my back window stopped working too(obviously unrelated). It doesn't pop open when you push the button. Door lock in the button doesnt lock/unlock either. I can still open the whole door, just not the window only. Have you heard of this problem? Just happened maybe 2 weeks ago, always fine before that.

do the other door locks work normally?
there is an actuator back there to release the glass, and I think the lock/unlock may be part of it also

If you are asking when I turn the key in the button, no, nothing locks or unlocks. Pushing the button in is not releasing the glass, so I think it is all related somehow.
The door lock works fine for the rear door using the power locks either at the front doors or inside the cargo area. Did you follow that? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/beerchug.gif

with that info my top of the head diagnosis would be the rear window latch which includes the actuator to release the glass.
avg dealer list would be approx $165 for the part...obviously I can get it a little better than that if ya need me to. That would include delivery to havasu, then you have a reason to head out that way http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumb.gif

Try taking your wire, attach it then epoxy it all in to give it more support. That might help.
How often do you need rear window defrost anyway??

JC Whitney sells a defroster tab repair kit that may do the job.
http://www.jcwhitney.com/autopar....defrost (http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/showCustom-0/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2002924/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2002924/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=defrost)
If that doesn't work you can try reinforcing this with the conductive epoxy (aka "defroster paint"), though I'm not sure how strongly it will hold.

Damn. I saw the title of this thread and thought it must be something serious so I'll keep my nose out of it, but damn did I ever miss a chance to slam a Chevy boy. Sounds like that thing is falling apart there Adam, you may want to look at total replacement with a Big Blue Oval.
