View Full Version : Another engine rebuild project

Well, this post won't get finished up until late-May, but I thought I'd let you know where I'm at now, before I head off to Iraq for the next few monthes...
Got both motors pulled...courtesy of KNC engine pulling service (aka Kurt)...he's got the best rates and service in town. Just finished up with the engine bays...got everything routed correctly...installed the trim pumps onto those Dana mount plates and moved them up onto the transom...moved the outdrive reservoirs more towards the center, so it's easier to get to...installed new trim indicator cables...and of course a bunch of cleaning. Oh, I also had to move the Port transon assembly up about 7/16" to match it up with the other side. The rigging department at Eliminator back in 1999 really sucked to say the least, but I've got most of their half-assed work fixed now. I should have taken a before pic, but here's what it looks like now. I also plan to add the Eddie Marine polished sleeve onto the hatch actuator, and possibly a couple mirrors above the engines for a little more bling.

Everything is covered up...but here is two completely disassembled 509's waiting for rebuild. Â*First time I've ever had two engines apart in my garage....

What kind of mods are you going to do to the engines?
Trouble Maker
02-05-2006, 09:04 AM
So, does this look like $3,500 worth of parts?? New pistons and H-beams for the Starboard motor...already had the set for the Port motor. New Ferrera Inconel exhaust valves and Ferrera Severe Duty intake valves for both motors. New Comp valve springs with 10 degree titanium retainers and locks. Slighty larger Comp Camshafts...basically these just have more lobe separation so I won't have anymore water reversion problems. Trying the Total Seal gapless rings this time instead of the Childs & Albert. And, two new Melling oil pumps and all the gaskets. I'll also be changing over to dual plane intake manifolds, so the air filters aren't pressed up against the hatch...the single plane ones I currently have set up pretty high and are probably a bit overkill anyway. I plan on port and polishing the heads to pick up a bit of efficiency and horsepower...looking for around 550 hp when I'm done, which should get me too the 100mph mark.

Phuck Eddie Marine though, thieving bastards!
Good luck and godspeed on your upcoming oversees 'trip'.

Nice parts dude!
Your boat already hauled ass, now it is going to really haul ass

Bad pic...but when I took apart the starboard motor I found this little surprise...a broken valve retainer lock, which doesn't happen that often. But, the new titanium parts I have now should solve that.. Anyway, I found the broken pieces laying in the head and the one remaining lock was getting pulled through the retainer. I'll have to make a visit to the machine shop to get it apart. I probably wasn't too far away from dropping a valve, which would have a made a nice $$$ mess... Good thing I didn't make that last trip out to the lake on Christmas. It also damaged the lifter, but I got a new one already. That engine had also been going through some oil, but I answered that question when I found a broken ring in the #7 cylinder... And, the port motor as some of you know broke an exhaust valve last summer, which was more then likely caused by the water reversion problem...cold water being drawn across the hot valve over an over until it cracked...
Moral of the story... Crate motors are not always the best way to go, which is exactly what these motors were...ZZ502 long blocks that Eliminator throw oil pans and intake manifolds onto, then stuffed them in the boat. But after this rebuild there gonna be called Gary Wright 509 racing motors... Hahahaha
P.S. I've two set of aluminum valve covers for sale...they have logos "Eliminator 500hp" on them. I'm gonna ge me some shiny purple ones instead...

Man, imagine the left over parts bucket your going to end up with. Or does that only happen with customer motors? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Should be sweet when you get it done. Hope you make it home early enough to put it together before 6-17. 550HP each in a 28'er should get you close, if not over 100 mph. I know the 30' Eliminator with twin HO's runs close to mid 90's or so. You should be there no problem. Also, the 28 tall deck can run in 'almost' any kind of water. I say that because I have seen Mead with 10'ers rolling. Scary stuff at times. It sunk one of my Dad's boats back in the day.

Yeah, I know the ZZ502 was never a good choice for a marine engine, but that was primarily because of the camshaft only having a lobe seperation of 110 degees, which led to water reversion problems with some setups. As far as the heads though...I think that's the same GM stuff you'd find on many other mercruiser type motors....
The manifolds are Weiand "Team G"...one is rectangular and the other is oval...that's just another example of Eliminator just throwing shit together...then putting a $100k price tag on it...
If your serious about the valve covers...come and get'em...

I've torn down 3 "marine" motors and not seen anything "marine" about them. Measured the first one as it came apart and tolerances were all in spec per book. I would not hesitate to go the zz502 route with a cam change next time unless I felt that having Gary give them some extra love was in the budget.
God I hope I dont need a motor anytime soon.
zz502 has small cam lobe seperation, non-hardened valve seats, non Iconel exhaust valves in the heads & higher spring pressure, and only a 6 quart pan...

Yeah, I've been terrible with taking pics on this rebuild...I've just been focused on getting them back together...two motors has been a real job.
Today Kurt was ready to go when I gave him a call, so I still needed to put a few finishing touch on one motor while we were waiting for a break in the weather to install the other one. It would have been a good pic to see the boat with Kurt's backhoe sitting behind it, both getting soaked from the down pour we had. Not a good day to install motors!! Oh well, we got it done...now I just need to hook everything up and see if they'll fire. I should be at the lake on Sunday though for test run...

The motors ran great... Only problem I had was a small water leak at the thermostate housing on the intake manifold, which was an easy fix. I also need to put larger accelerator pump squirters on the primary sides of the carb (they stumble a bit coming off idle under a quick acceleration). I'm gonna go cut the oil filters this morning to make sure all the insides of the motors are happy...then I'll call it a two good rebuilds.....

I never did dyno one of the motors like I was going to but I don't think I really incresed my hp that much...maybe 20-30 horsepower is all. The cam shaft is a bit bigger but the heads are the limiting factors on these motors...I'd have to change them out or do some serious modifications to get anymore flow out of them. But what I did gain is two motors that are NOT ZZ502's anymore and they should last for a long time without breaking valves...etc.etc..
I've got a GPS speedo now though, so I can the real numbers...I'll open it up this weekend and find out...
