The past couple of trips have been less than exciting as far as speed runs go. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/traurig001.gif With each trip I seem to lose more and more speed and power. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif This past trip (regatta weekend) was the worst so I decided to do a little investigating on the motor and here is what I found....cylinder compression ranged from 75 to 120 psi. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/insane.gif I would say that I was a little on the low side with 75 and a little on the high side for the spread between cylinders! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
So here is my question....
If I pulled the heads off and found that it was the valves leaking.....
1. How many of you would just do a valve job and put it back together? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/ohboy.gif
2. How many of you would recommend pulling the whole motor and doing the bottom end at the same time? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/ohboy.gif
3. Anyone know how much power I could add to it before I would have to switch out the fuel injectors for bigger ones?
Damn Kev that sucks. But, if I were to do a rebuild, I would go to GT that is near you and have him tell you what exactly your options are. Also, he could tell you what you would expect. Forget the valve job, go ahead and freshen up the motor and throw a whipple on there. You already have the mag setup to you should be okay.

I called and talked to Paul Pfaff already. If I am going to pump up the HP (if...did you catch that http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif ) I want someone that knows what they are doing so that they can recalibrate the ECU to account for added HP.
Pfaff told me that they can change the cam and port the heads for +/- $600 which should net me about 75-80 hp. I would like to get a minimum of +100 hp if I am going to rebuild this thing. That should put me in the THOR range for mph! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/aktion033.gif
Yeh it should. Pfaff is just down the street from my house. Smart guys over there.
415 HP to 500 HP should put you right around 80 mph which is Thor range.

That was what I was thinking. Maybe I should push a few ponies out of it just so I can say I am faster than you! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif

Even with my sick motor I am still prolly faster than you, so what are you laughing at? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Drop a 540 in it and be done, 650hp on pump gas.

I don't want to spend the extra cash for a new block, etc. I also don't need that much HP. I would be happy with just a few internal upgrades and few more ponies. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Definately will do that! I don't want anything crazy, still want a "turn-key" motor. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

As soon as you do a valve job 50 hours later you will have to do a ring job. So you might as well do it all. I agree with Thor is going with a new motor. GT540 baby!!! But that will be $$$$. Diff cam, port-flow the heads, intake. ( is there one for the 502?) and maybe exhaust and you could get 125??!! Plus reliablity!!!

I would agree with RH, if you gonna do it do the whole thing, ask me I know. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Tear it apart...
You just need new bearings, pistons, rings, camshaft, lifters, rockers, springs, valves guides, and valves for a grand total of around $1500-$2000, plus about $150 in gaskets. New fuel injector might be a good idea also. But anyway, it's really not that expensive to do the job right, then you can forget about it for another 400hrs..

Yeah, I think you and others are right...spend a little extra to do the whole thing and then I don't have to worry about it. Just hope I can make through my next two planned trips. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif Then I will tear it apart this winter. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/aktion033.gif

Best idea yet Kev. A little extra $$$ will make you feel a tad more safe in terms of 'turn key'. Pretty cool to have a Paul Pfaff motor in your rig too. Wish I could say that.

you could...just step up buddy http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif
maybe do a Pfaff motor in your next Ultra http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dunno.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumb.gif
I was down at Ultra and we were talking about the 25 deck and it will be a smaller version of the 27 Shadow. Sweet f'n boat IMO. But, my problem is I love how fun my boat is to drive. I would love to get 200 more HP in my boat to see what it could do. Ultra sold a 247 with a 575 and it runs 92 mph. That is fast.

thats really F'in fast for a boat that you have to drive-through 75 yes/no??
here's a thought...keep the 247 and ADD the deck-boat to your arsenal. If you can't get enough river time to justify 2 boats, I can always offer to run 1 for you now and again http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif
I heard a rumor from a little birdie (read JW) that they just had an order for a 23' deck with a 525, they figure it will run in the 90's
Dan,
I have driven mine through 75 a couple of times now and it is stable. I click the trim tabs down once and let her rip. No porpoising at all and hit 78-79 on the GPS.

Definitely I'd replace the valves instead of doing a valve job. I'd also up the cam and add headers if you haven't already done so. Remember that a motor is nothing more than an air pump so if you improve the intake you need to improve the exhaust to take advantage of the extra intake capacity.
Be prepared to freshen/upgrade the drive if you haven't already.

E502 - Will definately do the exhaust at the same time. It will prolly be the IMCO Power Flows, since I can really afford the CMI's.
As for the outdrive, I will prolly just be easy on it out of the hole and when it does let go will prolly upgrade to the Bravo 1X. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
