But now it appears that my MSD 6m2 box retired in the 3 years the boat has been sitting. :banghead :banghead

Looking at replacing it with the Crane HI-6M

Anybody have any experience with them?

Trouble Maker replaced his MSD with a Crane in his old boat. He was much happier.

I have heard the same thing....MSD just quits without any warning. Crane has been holding up so far from what I have heard.

Yeah, it's the same troubles Beachbum had last year when you towed him in. Bad coil. And I know of one other time he had that problem.

I think that was his coil not the MSD box. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh.gif

I looked at both. Â*The problem was no one made a Crane plate to hold it on the back of the head. Â*The Crane has adjustable rev limiter built in, but the cost is almost double of the MSD.

True, but from what I hear you may go through 2 or 3 MSD boxes before you switch to Crane. So you may have been better off to buy the Crane from the start. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dunno.gif

You could always make or have a plate made, right? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh.gif

Crane has issues also, do a search on OSO about it.

Yes coil, not box, but still made by MSD.

There are several different MSD coils out there. The only one that is recommened for boat is the Hi Vib one. It can be mounted at any angle and can with stand the abuse a boat will give it. It's all over the MSD site not to use any other coil. The price differance is double for the coil but it has a warrenty on. Do it right the first time and you won't pay more later.

MSD sucks!! Go with the Crane...cost is about the same if you take into consideration that the Crane has the built in Rev limiter, plus you don't have to buy all the different rev limiter chips for it, plus you can get rid of your mercruiser ignition advance and select from the 8 advance curves that the Crane already has built into it, plus it's digital.......

Did I mention that MSD sucks........

Not sure about the big cost difference you guys are talking about? Jegs sells the MSD box for 272.00 and the Crane one for 292.00

With being Digital and including the Rev limiter. Sounds cheaper to me in the long run.

I did a search over on OSO and there are many that say they carry a spare MSD for each motor ALL the time. And one of them is usually in the shop getting re-done.

I don't know about you but I don't want to be half way between Bullfrog and Dangling and worried about a MSD box.

Granted if its mechanical or electrical it can fail. But MSD seams to have an issue bigger than what could be considered. Normal.

Ordered the Crane, should be here Fri. If it also fails I will be upfront about it. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumb.gif

The only thing that suck about the Crane is that you have to drill new holes in the rotor ignition timing gizmo. Buy a couple of rotors...you'll probably screw up at least one of them trying to get it dead one....

I am going to re-use my MSD Dist. Crane is sending me what needs to be done to it which if I remember right it is just locking out the mechanical advance and changing to thier plug.

Not to sure if this applys for this application but when you lock out the mechanical advance dont use wire... I have heard of people actually putting a spot weld in there...

There was a fella that had a motor built and they used the wire trick and you could still advance or retard the thing just using your hand.. it wasnt very secure... might want to do some quick research on that as well.. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Just thought i would share my 2cents..
