View Full Version : HTM Crash at Sandbar!

It seems that "Chet17" from HotBoat.net was in his HTM SR-24 last weekend (Saturday) and cruising by the sandbar had his trim all the way up to avoid shallow spots and while making a turn at about 40-45 mph. went into a slide and finally caught a sponson and rolled his boat over. He and his wife are OK which is the most important thing!! Just wondered if you had read about it, thought you all would want to know if you hadn't.

I read about it on Hotboat.net. Pretty scary. Makes me think of all the times I've driven too fast and launched off a wake, etc. I think people should have to pass a course to be a licensed boater. Nothing crazy, but at least some qualified advice on how and why not to do this stuff. I agree with the posts over there that pretty soon the government will step in and take more control if we don't take control of ourselves.

I hate to say it, but I think that whole alley should be no wake anyway just like copper canyon - but you'll still have the aholes (like the one that clipped my bow two weekends ago) who pay no attention to the no wake zone and don't know how to drive a boat.

That speed certainly isn't too bad compared to others I've seen out there, but that goes to show anything can happen.

Yep, I don't know if you followed the "licensing boaters" thread on HotBoat or not but RUN2RIVER and I got some heat for saying what you just said. I think something needs to be done too. ANYONE with enough money can buy or rent a boat and be on the water that same day and driving a boat is a hell of a lot harder than driving a car (no brakes, etc.). There are far too many a**holes out there that have no idea what they are doing and just know that the river is a good place to drink and see girls! I don't know if a license is the right answer or not, but some kind of mandatory class is in order, and like you said it's coming whether we like it or not.

I don't know if a license is the answer either, but I do think that there needs to at least be some type of class for those that rent boats/pwc. I'm not saying the problems are only with the rentals, but it certainly seems to be rental PWC's that are cause of the problems with those types of vessels.

At the very least, every boat owner should be required to take a Coast Guard Boating Safety class prior to registering their boat. Unfortunately, just taking a class and/or having a license will not make someone operate a boat in a non-ahole way. It takes common sense in addition to, and some people will disagree with me, no alcohol. One of the rules we have on my boat is the drive does not do any drinking. Fortunately, there are usually only two of us that drive.

Oh yea, I agree, I mean these rental places are having to tell people where the F***ing throttle is. Â*If they don't even know that....! Â*And I agree it won't stop people from acting like a**holes, but at least they would know what they are doing. Â*And also, neither my girlfriend nor I drink but no one that is driving my boat is allowed to drink. Â*Seen too many accidents and legs cut off (like last year in the channel, grosse! )
We all make mistakes though no matter how many times we have driven the boat.......... right Greg!!! Â*http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I'll vote for a coast guard course, and I'll take it too. I think we all need to keep aware of things and potential hazards to our own, and our passengers lives. Maybe there should be a short movie like blood on the highway that you have to watch in traffic school. That clip from the channel you mentioned could make the reel I'm sure. What happened anyway? I didn't even hear about that.

Some of those over at hotboat.net are a bit nuts, talking about shooting boats and fighting, etc.

As far as I see it, I'm glad he's ok as well as his wife. Â*They'll live to boat another day and be more careful, which is the important thing. Â*Who cares how fast he was going (why fight over it)... it happened! Â*If it was stupid carelessness he knows it I'm sure and won't do it again (just thank God no one got hurt). Â*If not then it was an accident. Â*There's no changing what happened - can't we all just get along?

We're all here for the love of the boating scene, let's remember that, and be safe!

Amen brotha'!!
Hey maybe we can get a package deal on those courses!?! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Yea, it was disgusting. I can't remember what weekend it was (late summer), but it was packed (typical) in the channel. Well you know how for some of the bigger boats that are "beached" if they come loose off of the sand, they are too heavy to simply pull back up (like I can with mine and I'm sure your's) they have to start it up and give it some juice.... well I'm sure you see where I'm going with this. They were all very drunk, playing Eminem way too loud and a guy was sitting on the swim step when the driver gave it gas! The music was so loud he couldn't even hear the engine running and he was sitting right next to it!! We were all one boat over, they all started yelling and screaming, and blood was everywhere (red water and sand)!!!!!!!!! I called 911 on my cell, and have to give props to Havasu medical, they were there very fast.

Anyway, VERY disturbing seeing that in person! Made a real long, quiet ride back to Needles (my buddy's house). Almost makes me want to get a jet or something. NEVER start your boat when anyone is in the water!!!!

DAMN! That's a perfect reason to have the driver of the boat be sober. Of course, even sober if you don't check back there you could do the same thing.

Did any of you hear about the accident on Saturday March 23rd? If not, the gist of the story is that someone got pitched out of the bow of a boat, don't know if they were leaning over or not, but then got run over by the prop. Cut him up pretty bad according to the news article at http://www.havasunews.com I guess they airlifted him to Vegas University Hospital. Hopefully he is doing ok and recovering. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Regarding the boards at www.hotboat.net , you just have to take them for what they are, a public forum. Some of the guys over there get out of hand and say pretty stupid/amazing stuff. Shooting boats and/or PWC's with paintball guns, can you say assault? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif I think most of us try to learn something and help people when we can with information.

Everyone here seems cool and mellow.

Yeah, I was just reading that thread at hotboat!! That's what we need, one guy yells so the other guy hits, that guy hits so the other gets a knife, he gets a knife so then a gun..... WTF!! Â*It is unfortunatly Â*a never ending "battle with the A**holes"! Â*I love hotboat.net and have been reading them for a long time and posting for a little while and never take them too seriously, except when there is info. to be shared or taken!
I like this site the way it is, I've been coming here more than hotboat and hope more will follow.

By the way Scott, very nice looking boat ya' got there!! Hope to see it in person soon.

I thought you said HTM!? Â*http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I'm still gonna' get one, but I don't know.... that's two HTM crashes so far, and "rumor" (mind you it's a rumor) is that an HTM was involved in the other collision at Parker last week. Ah hell maybe I'll join the Essex family as well, they don't make a cat do they?

http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif No cat, but a great lookin 25 ft. that's new as of last year.

I was thinking HTM, but I keep hearing about the crashes and just wonder if they're that stable, or if it's the conditions, or the driving. I can tell you though, and Scott can vouch for this, that the Essex is solid as a rock, and I've never once felt out of control with it even in really rough water. I think maybe I'll stick with what I know. Ah hell, who am I foolin, I won't be buying another boat for a long long time.

Yes, I'm with you Greg, I have never once felt out of control in the Essex. And Greg is right, I can gree with him on this, Essex builds a rock solid boat!

If you ever get the chance to go by their showroom, you need to check out the 1/4 hull they have. They laid up a 1/4 hull specifically so prospective buyers can see what the inside of the hull actualy looks like. And tehy take it to all the boat shows, oddly enough I've never seen another builder do that.

Also, they have a piece of their hull that was shot at point blank range I believe, with either a .44 or a 9MM and the bullett did NOT go thru the hull! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

You know, at first I did not like the 25 Tempest, but it has grown on me I guess. I really like the one they have now with the walkthru cuddy. What I would really like to see Essex come out with is a deck boat along the same lines of the Conquest or Eliminator. I don't know when I'll buy another boat, but it will be an Essex for me, no doubt about it! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

They have probably been reading some of those whacko's posts over at hotboat. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Just gettin' prepared!!

I don't know why, I just want to try a cat all I've ever had are "V" bottoms. But you are both right, they rule as far as stability goes. Do either of you know how a cat rides in rough water? I definitely need to swing by Essex (they put the SEX in Essex)......... but first things first, I have to resto. my current boat!!

I've never ridden in cat so I do not have first hand knowledge. My understanding is that a cat performs better in rough water than glass.

When you swing by Essex, if you talk to Duane, Amy, or Ron, tell them you know/have been talking with Scott Ernst, they'll know who you are talking about. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I haven't ridden in one either. Duane is just about the coolest guy you could meet at a boat dealership - Amy is way cool too (and hot).

Tell them we sent ya!
