View Full Version : Duramax Diesel?

Alright, I know my truck is less than a year old (and paid off) but I'm thinking about getting a new Duramax Diesel for the new boat (details to come on the boat). What mileage are you actually seeing? Do you have any modifications-wheels/tires, chips, etc..? I will store the boat at Havasu (in my new house once built, otherwise in a buddies garage--apparently not E502's house since he built his garage too small for me http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif ), so the drive to the ramp is less than 5 miles or so. I'm trying to justify the money for the new truck, and if the mileage is good, then that will help. I'm averaging about 16-17 in my 1500 crew cab now. I figure whatever boat I buy will weigh around 6-7K on the trailer.
Thanks,
Patrick
PS- I will only buy a CHEVY, regardless of how good the others may be http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif

Is that 16 to 17 mph pulling the boat?
I have a new duramax. When I cruise the truck at 70 no boat I get 23.5 mph.
I can pull my 38ft 17000lb toy hauler over the Cahon at 68 mph.
I get 17mph pulling my 28ft Nordic at 70mph.
Taller tires. I have the chip re-programed to a stage 2.

If you are only going to tow a very short distance and your truck is paid off....why is it that you want a new one? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dunno.gif I don't think you will get much more than a 2-3 mpg gain going with the diesel and will cost you a whole lot of $$$, too. Doesn't seem worth it to me? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif

I average about 16mpg. Not much towing at all. The ramp is about 1/2 mile from my place.
Bone stock except for the 285 tires.
I certainly am not getting no 20 mpg in mine.

Yes. The programer that I got does reprogram the speedo for the taller tires.
Remember that the 23.5 mph is without towing. I work 115 miles round trip from home so I can get a pretty good read on the mileage my truck will get. I reset the mileage on the "Economy Meter" when I leave home. Set the cruise at 70 and when I check the meter arriving home it says 23.5. Checked it doing the math when I refueled and it was dead on.
Normal stop and go and no cruise control will get me about 20 to 22 mph.
The downside is that Diesel is the most expensive fuel right now.
The up side is that there is way more power and the engine will last longer than a gas engine.

my 02 2WD ext cab gets around 20 on the highway (bone stock) and 14 towing my 29'
the 05 dually (crew cab long bed) 4WD seems to get a best of 16 not towing...
the mileage did improve when I added the Edge juice, and actually seems to be the best at power level 5 http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif
Do you NEED the truck to pull a 27' Shadow? NO, but I wouldn't tow without the diesel http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumb.gif

It's not the regular towing to the lake in Havasu that will get you - it's the once in a while towing to Mohave or Mead or Powell or wherever the boat has to be for publicity (did I say that?) that will eat you up with a gas burner. Get the diesel. You won't regret it when you do take a longer trek.

What's a Shadow? I like the diesel idea alot...but we all know I have a problem with stock vehicles---a 8" lift, with 20" wheels and a 37" tires will set me back atleast 5-6K, plus some performance enhancements. For towing a few miles from Havasu to the ramp, I'm not concerned. However Phoenix to lake Powell or from havasu to Mead, those may not be that much fun, but I'm in no hurry.
Thanks for the info.

I just sold my 2003 F250 with the 6.0L diesel. Around town it was never better then 13mpg, at 60mph I got 18mpg, at 80mph I got 14mpg, and 12mpg over that. The 2005 motor has lots of internal improvements but no better mpg.
Towing the Nordic it got the same mpg as unloaded.
If you want a diesel then buy the Dodge, if you want a nice comfy ride then buy the Chevy, if you want something to haul lots of weight in the bed and four adults then buy the Ford.
As far as modifications, the only one I would do is the exhaust. Don't even think about a chip or intake - diesels lots of need CLEAN air.

Save your cash and put it in real estate or a deferred retirement program of some sort. It sounds like you may be towing only 5% to 10% of the time, the extra power is always nice but not as noticable if you are not towing. Besides the ride of a 1/2 ton is much better than the 3/4.
That being said, I have a 2002 3/4 crew 2wd with the 6.0 gas and I love it, I'm glad I didn't buy the diesel. I'm paying it off next month, looking forward to no truck payments. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Rod- I definately agree with the realestate thing. I am looking for lots right now in LHC and plan to build a house soon. So, the tow will be less than 10 minutes.
I know the Diesel will be awesome, and I will buy one, just not sure if I am going to shell out the cash now. A free paid truck is the best http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

If they need a lot of "clean air" why would you do the exhaust without the intake? You need to open up both ends for the air to flow.
Also, so far all I have done is the re-programing of the chip. Major improvement. More than you get with an exhaust/intake mod.

The programmers and performance chips throw the computer fuel mileage readings WAY off. I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but there is a lot of info on this subject on dieselplace.com's message board.

I am going to get a diesel when I get back. Either the Ford or Dodge. If Ford doesnt get their engine right in the next 4 years it will be a Dodge. It still might be. Dodge is 7K cheaper than Ford. Big selling point.

Love my new Dodge Ram 2500 HD. Pulls like a mofo. And...you'll know you'll never have a problem with that motor. Tranny - if automatic - maybe but not the motor! They upgraded the automatic tranny for 2005 so the past few problems should be gone. Check out TurboDieselRegister.com for the inside scoop on the Dodge CTD.

What kind of Tranny problems?? My Dodge would all of a sudden drop out of lock up for no reason. Would do it alot one day and then wouldnt for months. Weird.
Do you have the diesel?? What kind of mileage are you getting with that thing??

There have been problems in the past with the trannie behind the Cummins Turbodiesel self destructing under extreme loads. Loads a lot higher than our boats. STV_Keith can probably tell you a lot more than I as I'm a newbie Cummins owner.
Mileage? If I keep the truck at 70 or less I am getting about 18-1/2 MPG. Over 70 it drops to about 16.9 MPG at 80 MPH. Note though I got the 4.10 rear end which isn't really needed for the loads we tow but the deal was too good to turn down and I don't tow long distances very often. Around town in LHC - lots of stop and go - it is getting abot 15 MPG. Mixed top and go freeway driving some with steady 70's and I have been pulling 18. We haven't towed anything seriously with it yet...that's going to happen in a coupla' of weeks though...more then.
If you decide to buy I have a great connection with Dodge - one of the HotBoat.com members is in the finance department at a SoCal Dodge dealer.

Bought the GMC. I liked it best for overall performance, looks, and interier. Wife had a lot of input also since it is her vehical to drive around. My full time ride is a bike for my long commute. Wife said she wanted the GMC and when the wife is happy everyone is happy. Of course the reverse holds true also. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/chainsaw.gif
