Well we've put around 3.5-4 hours on the new motor. How soon should I change the oil and when would we say is sufficiently broke in. I have yet to really open it up but towards the end of the weekend was getting on it just a little more as the day wore on. Unfortunatly our next trip won't be untill the one on mid June and it will be for 3-4 days. Think I could leave the oil in there that long or should I change it before we go? It only costs about $15 so thats not the issue just want to do it right. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

If in doubt change the oil. Better yet, get one of them portable oil change pumps and take it with you with a case of oil and change it again on the trip.

They say to change the oil after the first 10 hours and then every 50 hours from there or once a season, which ever is more frequent. Â*You should be good on the oil that is in there unless you plan on putting more than 6+ hours on it. Â*http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif Just make sure to check the level often. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
As for opening it up....when I had mine rebuilt they told me that after the first couple of hours I was good to let it rip but just not to keep it there for too long. Â*http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

If this is a rebuild then I would change the oil now. Significant difference in the quality of the "clean room" between the Mercury assembly lines and the engine builders back room.

No one has ever blown a rebuilt motor by changing the oil too soon. I'd change it now.
better safe than sorry.. change it now... plus you get some of the milling crap outta there and dont have to worry about it.. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif change it now and change it again in about 10-15 hours... and your set for your yearly changes or 50hr mark whichever comes first..

Kevin I thought your boat only knew 2 throttle positions, wide open and idle http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif

It shall be changed then. Thats pretty much what I was thinking, but wasn't sure if there might be some reason to not change it so early. Thanks all. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumb.gif
Kev,
you had your rebuilt? When? How much HP is in it now?

Change your oil... Then, cut your oil filter open and check for metal shavings etc...that will tell you whether your engine rebuild was a success or not.

How do you do that without adding metal shaving to it?

Dont cut it with a saw. You can stick a screwdriver thru it and the use a utility knife or some snips. Lay all the insides out in sun and look for shiny stuff. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Over the winter. I only bumped the hp up to about 575! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif I had to jump up to a 30p prop. Only had it wide open for a short stretch and saw 84 mph on gps. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif I am sure with a little trim adjustment and prop work I should see close to 90. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif
P.S. I rebuilt the engine in my old boat and that is what I was refering too! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

When I do have it rebuilt...I will be adding about 100 or so HP to it. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif But that is not until it needs it and right now I have 400 hours on it.

Those things are only good for about 425 hours. You'll need to freshen that thing up soon.

Look for the brass ones buried deep in the filter element...it will be easy to spot.
