Does anyone know...

If a Nevada resident buys a new boat in California and pays California sales tax then takes the boat to Nevada and registers the boat for the first time in Nevada will he/she be subject to Nevada sales tax also?

If the boat is already in your name, the registration is just the reg fee. When I bought my boat, and brought it in from Canada, they still only got me for the $35 registration fee I believe.

Now the trailer, because I was transferring it, that's a diff story - that's DMV. But since you would already own it, you can just register it here.

This would be a new boat - not registered in any state but sold in California and delivered in California. Then, driven by the owner (Nevada resident) to Las Vegas and to be registered for the first time in Nevada. The law as written is a little fuzzy. It says that "proof of having paid sales taxes in Nevada" is required for registration.

You'll have to bring in the paperwork to DNR showing you paid sales tax in Ca. If the tax rate is lower in CA (doubt it) you will have to pay the differance to NV. Save you paperwork you can write off the sales tax on next years federal tax return.

When I bought mine, I paid AZ sales tax, (from a AZ. Manufacturer) and registered it in AZ.

Not sure what would happen if I tried to register it here in NV now.

I had to provide a form from the dealer to the department of wildlife showing I paid the sales tax. You can call 702-486-5127 for info. Mike you can use my address if needed.

Thanks for the offer but it's not for me. I'm doing a favor for someone else trying to get info.

No...our new boat will be registered in AZ and delivered in AZ. I'll pay California sales tax and be done with it.

you just have to show proof that taxes were paid on the purchase. This is done by showing your bill of sale to the dept of taxation located downtown. They give you a slip that you take to wildlife for the boat and dmv for the trailer. The slip allows these offices to move forward with the reg.

hope that helps....It can be done, it just takes a full day.

Nothing, you would pay the NV fee, if you want a NV title, it's another $20.
