Patrick - Gene's still waiting for your deposit! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I told him "It's in the Mail!"

The boat won't be going in the mold until May as there are two boats ahead of ours. So we have a bit of time to wait till the pictures start flowing. The good thing is I have to pass Howard every day in my commute.

Right now it is spec'd as a 28 hard deck but I'm still contemplating that choice.

The HP525 should fit right nicely under the hatch. Full hydaulic and HP900 tabs will round out the ride. The gel scheme and colors have yet to be decided except there won't be any orange in it.

Actually, Gene talked Lisa into it. But...I'm still thinking about it too. 3 mile per hour is what Gene thinks it is worth and it felt awfully comfortable sitting up there in the "Color Blind" boat on Friday night.

Billy's Boat is sweet--if I truely liked his gel, I'd buy it. 3 miles per hour--so you go 81mph with the cuddy/open and 84 mph without. Either way, its fast, stable, and a great ride. You can't go wrong. I would tell you to get the harddeck so that you can overnight in it---but why would you do that when you have a house http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Congrats! Not that you asked but --- It's much easier to drop an anchor out of an open-bow than it is with a closed deck. I know you spend lots of time in Steamboat, with a beautiful boat like that you may want to anchor rather than beach. Not to mention all the "new friends" you'll make with a ride like that.

I accepted a little less than what I originally asked for it but a little more than the NADA guide said it was worth. The new buyer still got a hell of a deal as the boat has exceptionally low hours. I listed it in both the BoatTraderOnline and Boat Trader printed edition. Got 4 calls on it from the online listing. I originally listed, I think, in January knowing it wasn't the best time to do so. I think if I'd have been more patient I would have gotten what I wanted but the itch to order the next one was too great. The buyer and I negotiated for about 3 weeks. Once he saw it the negotiations ended and he met my lowered price. The buyer wouldn't have had any chance to see the printed edition of Boat Trader as he was out of state.

List now and as the warmer days get here you'll be rewarded with a sale.

Yeah, that's one of the thoughts I am contemplating. I still think more time than not we'll be on the beach! Plus with all the friends that we know/have most have boats of their own. Rarely do we have even another couple with us - let alone more than that.

What I particularly like about the open bow is a place to relax in a quiet cove when we're off by our selves. Nice and spacious. Must be another foot or two longer than the Sterlings bow area.

I have until about the end of April to decide.

Thanks! That was part of my desire to go bigger. We were very happy with the Sterling but not being able to take it (reasonably) to Mead and Powell keeps us away from some awesome lakes. With the bigger boat we will be more comfortable in rougher water thus encouraging us to take more trips away from "home" waters.

Lisa I think you should still get the open bow and have Mike upsize the rocks on your ears. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/jump.gif The closed bow is nice but you like the space on the open bow and with the open bow there is no crawling over the deck to get in when you are beached in Steamboat.

Any Bullet updates? How's the gel ideas coming? Harddeck or Cuddy..the battle still lingers http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I got to drive Wes and Jennifer's 25 Bullet Harddeck this past weekend in Havasu (HP525, actual hotboat test boat that ran 85+ and the LA Boat Show boat). Let me tell you, the 525 was sweet in this thing. John from Howard drove it with them the next day. When comparing notes-- we both thought it was awesome. One thing for you two to consider--the difference in driving Tom's boat and Wes's boat was definately noticable to me. Sure, more power in Wes's, but I'm referring to the light/bow feeling. The harddeck really did feel a lot lighter underneath you, as compared to Tom's. I would still take the harddeck all day long-- but this is just something I never really thought of. You should definately drive both http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I've only ridden in a 28 Harddeck (not a cuddy/open)- one had 900+hp Turbo and the other was Gary's new orange one--not very good to comparison sake http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinbounce2.gif

Well....we're leaning back to the open bow. After this past weekend I have to rethink it a bit.

Lisa had only ONE job this weekend 'cause she stayed home - look through all my old Hot Boat, Powerboat and Family & Performance Boats magazines and find the gel schemes she liked....I come home and what do you think...she went through about may...be a dozen of them. Thursday night, Friday night, all day Saturday, Saturday night and 1/2 day Sunday and MAAAAYYYYBBBBEEE 12 magazines! Geez, at this rate we'll never get it designed!

Seriously, we are narrowing what we like...not there yet. We have until the end of the month - give or take a few - to decide both issues.

Did Wes tell you the noise reading he got on Friday at the Marina? I was impressed with the Gibson mufflers. Big sucka's though.

* Better looks (like you said)
* Stronger hull
* 2-5mph better top end (depending on the hull)
* Safer for passengers
* Privacy when you want it
* A place to get out of the sun
* Waterproof storage in bad weather
* More storage
* Less windy boat
* Better for nasty rough conditions especially in big lakes and offshore
* The ability to overnight (once you do it you will be hooked!http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
* Intimate activities!
* Less seating capacity!
* More room for stereo, DVD ("")units, etc
* More fun to drive looking over a beautiful closed bow (especially on a Howard)
* Easy anchoring (assuming your not in the river current). Â*Just drop the anchor off the stern.
* The interior stays substantially cleaner especially during towing. Â*I was shocked how clean the interior stays in my boat versus my former open bow.

etc, etc.....

Why would open vs. closed have any impact on that? Unless I'm mistaken Howard, like all top shelf builders, has two molds for the deck. One for a closed bow and one for an open bow. This results in the deck being strong regardless of which one you use. An open bow created by cutting out an opening in a closed deck hull and just adding some supports will not be as strong as one made from an open bow specific mold. That's they way it has been exaplined to me from some knowledgeable peeps in the industry.

Rivercrazy2
04-08-2005, 09:53 AM
I also assume that any open bow is tooled as a properly designed openn bow and not a cutout. But still, I believe a closed bow is stronger and more rigid than an open bow due to the nature of the strength added with the closed bow section.

I compare it to a convertible sports car. They are always heavier and flex more. No matter how well engineered the frame is.

I could be wrong, but that is my reasoning. And any open bow I've ridden in is not as rigid as a closed bow.

Essex502
04-08-2005, 10:13 AM
Structurally speaking (from a mechanical engineering background) the theoretical additional strength is in the crossectional shape of the closed versus open bow. But, since we won't be taking the boat into extreme conditions (one hopes!http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif it may be a moot point.

I am pretty strongly leaning towards the open bow...so far...3 weeks more to decide...

Definitely a plus to have less areas to keep clean. Cleaning the vinyl with a nail brush and GoJo once a year is a bitch with a 21' boat...I can only imagine with another 7 feet.

Positives to Open Bow:

* Nice place to relax and stretch out in a quiet, private cove and enjoy the sun. Better than laying on the hatch.

* Easy access to exit when beached.

* Can be used in a pinch to carry additional passengers.

* Docking at the gas dock to pickup or drop off the driver of the tow vehicle at day's end or beginning.

* Easier guidance into a slip with someone up front.

My personal favorite use of the open bow is the space to relax and stretch out. I've taken a few naps up front in a few coves.

Comments? Things I've left out one way or another?

Sounds like, for your intended usage, the open bow better suits your current needs. But you never know if those needs may change a little over the years.

Never thought I'd take my boat in the salt but its some of the best boating I've experienced. Its a total blast.....

Never thought I'd overnight much either. But its soooo nice to stay on the water at night. The privacy in some of the coves and the star light nights are really good for the soul. And not needing to launch / retreive/ launch / retreive for a weekend is a lot less stressful.

I was also concerned about docking with the closed bow. But, I've found that its really easy. I end up backing into most slips and getting used to driving into docking positions is pretty easy.

The only downside to anchoring a closed bow is in river current. PITA sometimes....

Your gonna love the belly gas tank. No worries about keeping each side tank even. And a center tank keeps the CG low. You will feel the difference....

Real hotboats are closed bows! J/K http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/jump.gif

Mike, having watched the same closed boaw boat on both Saturday and Sunday this past weekend, go with the open bow. It just seemed to me that they had to go through alot just to get in and out of the boat, which they did quite often, in the channel. But, that's just my opinion.
