Installed the North Stars by Livorsi....purrs like a kitten....no huevos!! Lost 150rpms but that's with five peeps in the boat, still ran 70 on the nose. I like the looks of the Rex's by far.

I think they were more concerned with the partying and the underage drinking at the moment. Wait till spring break is over....then I think they will have something to say. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

I like the look of the Rex's myself....Thanks Dr M http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumb.gif

I'm not real sure I like the way the boat sounds though....

Reminds me of my mom's old sewing machine. I idled past some board members in the channel sat,and they weren't looking so I tried revving to get their attention....yeah that was gonna work http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smilie_auslachen.gif

i haven't been able to follow any of threads on the new mufflers. i did read the article in hotboat but that's been about it. i'm leaning mainly towards the rex setup. i can't believe it made that much of a difference in how loud and the sound of your boat!! what can i expect to pay for a set of the rex mufflers and how long is the wait?

Offshore told me Rex was back ordered for about 4 weeks. About $750/pair

The mufflers will make you legal in CA and AZ and I'd guess NV too but it doesn't mean they will allow you to launch at the Lake Havasu Marina. They have there own B.S. test and standards.

The new Gibsons will be the only way to go for the 496/HO owners. The look seems to be very similar to current tips and the price cant be beat.
I will still wait though, I heard they are going to treat the law similar to the "seat belt law", if you could pulled for something other then mufflers, you just got 2 tickets...

Rx - It's gonna' depend on where you boat. As I've posted the LH Marina isn't allowing "load boats" to launch. Though they have no legal rights to do so that is the current policy. Windsor Beach in Havasu has had the rangers doing informal testing though I don't believe anyone has been cited yet. More and more of this pressure to quiet our boats is going to be present at the marinas and ramps. There's no way around it.

Mike what is the new law and are the sound test they did at the marina last year gonna get you in this year.

The law that went into effect in California on January 1 specifies a maximum noise level of 88 dB(A) measured 4 feet above the water and 39" from the back of the boat. This is a tough test and every 496 and up powered boat that I have personally tested failed. The Arizona law is still 86 dB(A) at 50' away. The AZ law is at ANY throttle position and speed. The CA law is at idle though there is a driveby law also still on the books for CA. Nevada - the last law I know about is the 86 dB(A) at 50' using the J34 (driveby) test. This is a difficult test to accurated perform and it's unlikely that an LE will cite you against it. NPS which controls Lake Mead and Lake Mohave is another story and I don't know the specifics.

Havasu is a unique problem. The lake is patroled by multiple entities and AZ and CA can enforce their own state laws ANYWHERE on the lake. Windsor Beach launch ramp has park rangers which have been doing some testing but to my knowledge no citations have been written. Lake Havasu Marina as decided to try to keep out all Hot Boaters and is using a 3 big step or 10' whichever is convenient and 86 dB(A) (using the wrong "C" scale and the wrong response i.e. fast versus slow) and is banning legal boats. See the March 2005 Hot Boat issue for more details. These bozos can't even get their own test right!

So....if you've going to Havasu be prepared.

BTW...once I instructed the LH Marina buffoon in the proper use of his noise meter my boat went from 87 dB© (fast) to 78 dB(A) (slow) and passed their bullspit testing procedure. What a bunch of NAZIS.

Now been out multiple times on Mead, launching at Lake Mead Marina and cruising Las Vegas Bay Marina now down by Hemenway wall. No cops, not stopped, and running loud. I also have driven into Calville Bay Marina a couple times midday right past the cops when getting supplies and not stopped. My dB meter concurs with the guy that gave me my ticket last season ... about 96 from the transom at idle, and who knows from 50' away at WOT (in the cockpit is about 106-08). I'm waiting a spell to see what happens this season, but then I rarely go to Havasu where the Noise Nazis dwell ...

Can anyone tell me if it is legal to have silent choice type systems on you boat? Will they make you do the db test through transom or can you shoot it out the prop. I thought there was a part of the law about exhaust cutouts. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dunno.gif

Silent Choice and Corsa, they are defined as "cut outs" and are illegal in Nevada.

NRS 488.195 Muffling devices.

1. The exhaust of every internal combustion engine used on any motorboat must be effectively muffled by equipment so constructed and used as to muffle the noise of the exhaust in a reasonable manner.

2. The use of cutouts is prohibited.

3. Subsections 1 and 2 do not apply to:

(a) Motorboats competing in a regatta or boat race approved as provided in NRS 488.305;

(b) Such motorboats while on trial runs between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and during a period not to exceed 48 hours immediately preceding the regatta or boat race;

© Such motorboats while competing in official trials for speed records during a period not to exceed 48 hours immediately following the regatta or boat race; or

(d) Any motorboat operating under a separate permit issued by the Department for tuning engines, making test or trial runs or competing in official trials for speed records other than in connection with regattas or boat races.

4. The Department shall issue permits for the purposes enumerated in paragraph (a) of subsection 3, under such conditions and restrictions as the Commission determines necessary to prevent a public nuisance and to assure the public safety. The Commission may adopt regulations to carry out the provisions of this subsection.

Ok that clears that up thanks VD . Now can any one tell me what the average db level from a 454 mag is? And do you think that slip in type mufflers would work on the smaller 454 type motors that will not work on the 496's? My boat is slow enough I dont want to steal any more hp than I have to. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/beerchug.gif

I can't say what the actual dB reading would be with a 454 but you won't pass the California test at idle IF your thru transom exits above the water. Furthermore, if you have a "Euro" style integrated swim step that seems to amplify the noise a little. The 496's I've tested before mufflers/silencers were in the mid 90's dB(A) on slow response and the 525's 98-100 decibels. My 502 was 84 dB(A) with the California test BUT it's exit was below the water line when idling.

Mufflers are here to stay. By the best you can afford.
