Thanks for the heads up PH. I read your message at 5 minutes until 9. I ran into the Family room and set the Tivo to record it. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I did get it recorded. Looking forward to watch soon.

Isn't TiVo the best. I was gonna set mine up to record it too, (had to go to work at 8:30), but had two other shows scheduled at 9, so I didn't to watch it. It doesn't appear to be playing again either. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Let me know how it was.

Yes, Tivo is the best invention ever. I see you said you had 2 shows already set to record, that means you have the Directivo. Very cool. I have 2 of them and would never want to be without again.

I watched about 20-25 minutes of the show last night and it looked really good. They were highlighting a 36' Eliminator Daytona and then started showing a monster Ferry with a top speed of 45 knots http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif . the name of the ship was "The CAT". Quite impressive to see this huge ship moving so damn fast. 4 9500HP turbine engines for a total of 38,000HP. I'll finish watching this week. I can try to get you a copy if you want it? It's not on the right tivo for me to make a DVD directly, but I could just dump to VHS if you're interested.

Oh yeah thats the one. Direct TV with the TiVo integrated into the same unit. 2 tuners watch 2 shows at a time or record 2 and watch a saved one. We have two units but one took a crap a few months ago, need to see what the F is up with that. If you want to make a copy go ahead but I'm sure it will be on again one day, I think it was originally broadcast in '03.

I'll dump the show to VHS sometime this week.

On your dead Tivo, what model is it? I may be able to do something with it, especially if it is an older model like a Sony T-60 or a Philips DSR6000. I've been able to revive a couple that have died. Usually just need a hard drive replacement, sometimes a loose ide connector on the inside. What is it doing?

PUMP 'HER'
10-27-2004, 07:28 AM
Hmmmm, what is it doing? Its been a while now since I've tried so I'm not sure, but it searches for the signal, starts downloading the info, but doesn't complete the task or something like that. I have switched the inputs with the one that works but no luck there, so I am pretty sure its in the unit rather than in signal supply. I'll have to go try it again and let you know whats going on.

If it is getting to 28% and then just hanging indefinately? Reset the Tivo with both feeds disconnected. Turn it on let it go and eventually(maybe 10 minutes) you will receive an error, choose the "Fix it later". Once everything is past the boot-up and you can get a menu, plug in the satelliite feeds again and it should work.

That's going by memory, but this was a pretty big issue a while back.

What manufacturer/model do you have?

PUMP 'HER'
10-27-2004, 12:17 PM
Philips, think its the 6000

Akamatsu
10-27-2004, 12:59 PM
Try that first, otherwise let me know what kind of errors you are getting. It should be fixable. Is it modified at all?

On a DSR6000-

Hard drive size - Default is a 40 GB or 35 hours of recording. Can be upgraded all the way to about 250 hours.

Network card addition-Allows tivo to run a ftp server, web server, etc. Tivo is Linux based, so any Linux program could potentially be put on it.

With network card, you can then set up the recorder to capture unscrambled video....This allows for creation of DVD's without the need for additional re-compression. DVD's at full quality of directv broadcast.

Probably a couple other things that can be done with them. Those are probably the big ones.

Hmmm.. I typed a reply, but I must have not hit send before rebooting my computer...

Even without the techno talk, Tivo's are cool. It took me a few months to convince the wife that we needed one. Once we got one it became a necessity. There is no way she would be without one. The kids love it as well.

I find myself in the car, wishing the radio had the capability to pause and replay like Tivo. Tivo is WAY more than a VCR for those that don't know.

I have thought about getting one as well, but isn't there a monthly fee? What about a dvd recorder? What is the difference?

Akamatsu
10-28-2004, 01:53 PM
It does cost extra monthly. They used to sell a lifetime subscription, but I don't think it's available any more.

DVD recorder is great for the home consumer trying to make DVDs, but doesn't come close to what tivo does.

Go to http://www.directv.com/dvr and read the features and FAQ for a good start.

I would type everything here, but I am getting ready for the commute home right now.

Here's a cut/paste to get you started:

"
-You'll never watch DIRECTV® programming quite the same way again - it's TV on your schedule, exactly how you want it!
-The DIRECTV® DVR helps make the most of your TV viewing experience! You get access to all the channels of DIRECTV® service with the convenience and control of TiVo®.
-Digitally record your favorite shows with one simple click - no VCRS and no hassles.
-Pause live TV, rewind, watch in slow motion and create instant replays.
-Automatically record an entire season of your shows, even if they move to a new day or time.
-Record two shows at the same time.* Then watch them whenever you like - even while you record other shows!
-Enjoy up to 35 hours** of your favorite programming."

The 35 hours of recording is just a start. HD upgrades are available. I got my dad an off the shelf 105 hr for christmas last year. He loves it. I have had ours for about 3 years, and will always have one unless something better comes along.

Ok, heading home...

HDTV Tivo is out.. Still way expensive for the box $800 - $1000. Gives you about 200+ hours of standard recording or 30 hours of HDTV recording. This is all mix/matcheable. Receives OTA signal as well. I think I'll be waiting for a bit of a price drop first. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/insane.gif I think I paid $400 for my first box and probably another $200 for the second. My main family room TV is not 1080i ready, and I can't justify the expense right now. Maybe in the next year or two.

If you don't already have Directv, you should be able to get a pretty good deal on boxes with 1 year sub. Probably all the equipment for anywhere from free to $100 with a little shopping. I haven't looked for a deal for anyone in a while but they are usually willing to give BIG discounts with a 1 year new subscription. You may be able to get 2 tivo units for less than $100 and name the amount of extra receivers.

I just saw a commercial on Direct today $100 for a tivo unit. But as Akamatsu said you could prolly get a little something extra out of them. But if you gonna do all that other stuff maybe you should just wait Kev.
