Mine do the same thing, when the brakes get too hot the grease boils out. I repacked one last nite that puked last weekend, there was nothing wrong with it but when the grease dumps out water can get in. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Maybe the brakes are set too tight, I don't know.
Rude, just add grease till the little plate in there starts to float, so to speak. Not pushed all the way out. You should be able to rock the plate with your fingers back and forth. Hope that helps.

T&B -- From what you are describing, the danger is overfilling. What happens is the grease heats up, expands in there a bit, and needs somewhere to go. You're lucky that it blows out all over the wheel cover on the outside, for if you tend to overfill too much, it will expand and blow a bearing sending grease out all over the inside, all over your hull, and in a trip burn up your axle to the point of seizing. I saw one like this in the gas station next to Offshore ... he was driving all the way from CA and wondering why it was hard to accelerate and what the smell was. Once he stopped, it was almost impossible to get going again.
Even with grease in them, the hubs will get real hot, even on short trips. I usually watch mine steam as they go in the lake at the launch.
Just put a little in, and not every trip. Diggin for $s has a good test re: enough grease. If you have been overgreasing, take them apart and clean them out, then repack with the right amount of grease.
Besides, don't want you drinkin all that beer by the side of the road one day while everyone else is at the lake http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif.

TMF is right....don't over fill them. Also, if they keep puking they might need to be replaced. You should remove and repack all the bearing and seals every couple of years. It might be time. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Someting new!!!
My Dad has a new trailer and got these oil filled hubs. They have a clear end cap to check the level and are factory filled. Made for saltwater. He has no problems with it at all. ALways cool, even after 200+ miles to the condo on the coast. When I change out, that is what I am going with. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

THere are two types..."Bearing Buddies" and "Buddy Bearings" made by two different manufacturers. "Bearing Buddies" I think are a better quality product than the other. I never leaked grease with the "Bearing Buddies" but I have replaced 3 of the "Buddy Bearings" I got on the Extreme trailer under the Essex. The first 2 happened less than a year into ownership and when I called Extreme they sent me 4 replacements. I used 2 and kept two in reserve. Recently I had another one go...I always fill just enough to have the color visible on the center portion of the unit so it wasn't overfilling just plain bad seal. I've put maybe 3-4000 miles on the trailer since new. They're pretty easy to replace if you buy replacements. Takes maybe 10 minutes of so.

You dont want to overfill them, and if you have be sure to replace the grease seal once grease starts comming out the seal is done.

how do you pack a bearing buddy how do you know when its bad is it supposed to have rust in there only go to mead with boat and trailer please help im a newby http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
Use grease for disc brakes, it will not break down under heat and will not piss out as much. I have one hub that consistantly pisses the grease out. My ubs are warm to the touch after a long haul they never get to hot to the touch even with a bunch of braking.

Get some new bearings, about $20/wheel. Get a glob of grease in your palm and bress the edge of the bearing into it as you rotate it around.

I'm using Amsoil Marine Grease, my bearings never puke, not even when dropping into Cottonwood. Give it a try.

This may not be good. Â*I touch every hub and tire everytime I stop for a potty break or fuel and mine are never really hot. Â*I can leave my hand on the hub more for than a few seconds. I can't say how hot they should be, but when one it really hot compared to the others there is a problem.
I also have one that pukes all the time, I am just going to change it and see if it stops.

Better grease definately helps. I switched from the standard green/blueish marine grease to a red colored grease made by OMC and haven't had problem since. Next repack I will be using Amsoil marine grease.
Where do you get Amsoil in Vegas?

A word of warning on the Amsoil Marine Grease, it oozes blue coloring in the heat. So I place my grease gun inside of a trash bag when stored.
Have fun!
