View Full Version : Need advice
BADFISH II

Ok, I need a basic 50 hour maintenance, new Tach, trailer tire fixed, trailer brakes checked, and braking mechanism on the trailer fixed.
I need advice, tell me where you'd take it, that's reasonable and does great work in a fair amount of time.
Thanks
Greg
You know what I have said before. For normal maintainance, go to Les' Marine in BC. But that is far for you LM. He has wrenched on my trailer as well. He does it all.
50 hours = New impeller, tune, hoses, fittings,......
He is pretty good and honest. Check around though, you may find someone like I did. Now, I need someone down here that is relatively close by.

Actually, I have a measley 150 hours on it right now, primarily because we usually cruise to a spot and hang out all day. I've put 40 hours on it this season so far. I had the 100 hour full service at about 110 hours.
Opinions??

Greg,
Is there a good marine mechanic shop in Vegas? Â*Usually, they know how to fix trailers too. Â*Not always necessary to take it to a trailer shop. Â*Also, you might want to try it yourself on the trailer. Â*Not that difficult to do. Â*If you're going to work on your trailer, you may as well do everything:
Wheel bearings, breaks, rotate tires, balance tires, check your wiring and lights, check your break actuator and lines etc. Â*
I also read about your adventures with the trailer. Â*Here is my list for things to carry in emergencies:
2 ton floor jack, 2 ton bottle jack, several pieces of 2x4 for blocking, lug nut wrench, tire chocks, 12 volt impact wrench, grease gun, nylon straps, rags....and this is just for the trailer. Â*The impact wrench is cheap if you buy it at harbor freight tools (and it works I have tried). Â*The nylon straps are for your axle if you have to tie it up (raise it) if the axle spindle gets toasted when bearings go out. Â*Call me if you have any other questions. Oops, forgot to add break fluid just in case.

Holy cow that's a list and a half. You can tell I wasn't a boy scout. Unfortunately, I'm not very handy either (I hate to admit it, but like I said before I know how to turn the key and make my boat go, that's about the extent of it http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif oh yeah, I can change a tire, but I'm not as quick at the LVHB pit crew was at the Fiesta (STV Keith, D4$, and Gary).
Thanks for the list Art. Question, why the two jacks? What's a tire chalk?

LM1, bring that trailer over along with an 18 pack of MGD and in about three hours we can have the brakes redone (barring any major broken pieces) bearings repacked, and check out the brake accuator.

Not this week but anytime next week after work would be fine. We need to have new brake shoes on hand, and seals for your bearings (4 of them)

Two different jacks because you never know where you will break down and have to pull over. Â*Most times the floor jack works good but you never know the condition of the ground/asphalt until your pulled over and then it's too late. Â*I have two jacks for any scenario. Â*Tire chocks are the blocks that go in front or behind (or both) of the tire(s). Â*Extra safety measure even though the trailer is hooked to the tow vehicle.

I can amortize a bond, calculate a PE/Growth ratio and compare sharpe ratios for an entire portfolio before I could change a tire http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
chocks, good idea. I have a floorjack (don't know what for http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ) I'll be carrying it with me from now on!
Man,
LM, you got the hook up.
I will give this a try.

I got tools. I actually had everything but the floorjack to change that tire the other day, but it was all buried in the boat and would have taken me twice as long to get it together.
D4$ is right though, I'm not real handy with mechanical stuff. This is going to be fun watching him make fun of me. No, I take that back, I will be the brunt of the jokes so it won't be fun for me:(

LM1, Wednesday is fine. I really won't make fun of you, I'll just trade ya some grease knowledge for some computer knowledge! Honestly though, if you never get your hands dirty with the stuff you can never learn how it works, or how to fix it on the way to lake. I'll PM you tomorrow.

D4$ Thats funny my buddy's say the same thing, but I was at lake mead last year and had a leak spring snap YEP snap WOW I couldn't find a leaf spring for the life of me out there I went everywhere , they keep telling me they would have to order that size uhhh!! anyway I found a guy to weld it. Leave the pennies in. It wasn't a fluke. You don't want to risk damage to your brake drum if it isn't already shot.

D4$-I think I see disc brakes on that thing soon. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif What did you do Greg, save a few pennies (hehehehehe) and not have disc brakes put on that thing in the first place? I am going to redo my trailer this winter, and I am going to go for the disc brake conversion. There is a lot of pluses to them as well as less maintenance. Good luck to you two, if you ever get to it. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
BADFISH II

I have disc brakes http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
The pennies keep the actuator from making the brakes work because they locked up and made the brakes smoke BUT... we were on a long, gradual, downhill slope when it happened so there was no pull or force to unlock the actuator, which I think is why it locked up.
I've never ever had that problem before, and I caught is really quick from what Dave said - he was behind me.
