Just an interesting topic, I think...

What did you major in and what are you doing with your eductation now...i.e. if you majored in Engineering are you and practicing Engineer now?

Me...Engineering but now more I.T. related.

Good topic! It seems these days most people have a degree in a specific field and its never used. I never finished my college education, instead had to get out and work to make a living. I have always been in the IT field. All of my promotions have been based on job performance. I would definitely like to complete school and get my degree sometime.

In some fields a degree is nothing more than a "union card" to get you through the door. Many, many companies (such as mine) require a degree just to talk to you. I've hired plenty of degreed engineers who didn't know squat and a few without degrees who were my best guys. You never can tell.

The funnies hire I ever had was a secretary who had an "English Lit" degree and worked pretty damn well as a secretary.

LOL Â*http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif Â*You are correct. Â*My company looks for degree's as well. Â*I just got lucky since I had the experience. Â*They usually require a BA or MBA. Â*Even in our Customer Service dept unless you get in by referrals. Â*It seems now a days that most companies can hire an individual without a degree and train them for less than someone with a degree. Â*I have friend's with degree's that have been looking for jobs for over a year. Â*Companies are always looking to STEAL from your pockets with the way the economy is now. I have been trying to get finished with school for 15 years now. I get 100% tuition assistance, but it is hard to take classes when you are gone all the time. And then when you are gone you only have about 20 min computer access. Oh well. I am thinking after this assignment I will be able to get finished up. Have about 64 hours. Over 15 year, let see that is 4.2 hours a year. What a hectic course schedule. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

I too have a PhD. But, I work in the 'real world' as a human factors scientist (consultant). I received my BS and MS from UNLV in Kinesiology (Motor Learning and Control) and my PhD from Auburn University (Kinesiology too). I just couldnt live in shitty parts of the country and work as a professor waiting to move out west. Instead, I started doing what I do now.

OmniTracs units are satellite units that text message (with in seconds), GPS positions (once an hour), and any info from the ECM of the truck..ie speed, fuel mileage, mileage, engine temps ,over speed and so on.

One thing about the military, even though I don’t have a degree yet I have tons of responsibility. And lots of authority. Plus there is an emphasis on professionalism that I think is hard to find in the outside world. Where else will you find a vehicle mechanic or a cook carry them selves in a such a professional manner. Even when I have to run a detail just picking up trash I enforce standards such as appearance and pride in workmanship. I think that is why many corporations like retired or ex military personnel. Also, I like to think that leadership cannot be taught out of a book, but mentored over years. True, books can give you finer points and characteristics of a good leader, but a good leader is a learned process.

This is in no way meant to lessen a college education; I wish I had one but to throw my .02 cents in about my chosen profession. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

We just invent big words to sound like we know something. Most academic activities are spent obsessing over things that do not matter that much. But the pay is good and the freedom in terms of how many hours, days, weeks, etc. one has to avoid work can't be beat http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif.

...and you folks are right, the education only provides the paper to get in the proverbial door. Some of the most educated folks are also the most socially delayed, insecure, incompetent, miscreants that walk the planet. If and when the world comes to an end, I hope I'm hanging with someone who has alot of real world experience and applied survival type knowledge, not a traditional academic.

Thor -- see pm reply. Agreed on point ... now that I have made the move out west, my wife and I kick ourselves for spending almost a decade in the midwest for the "opportunity" of working at supposedly prestigious universities. Lower pay and work took up more of the life. Could not go back to Fla. as the univ. pay scale was not compatible with the lifestyle we wanted. Moving out here was the best thing we ever did! After buying our first family boat (a Caravelle Interceptor 23'http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif back in NE, we started basing our professional moves on where there was good access to water. Some good lakes in Indiana/Kentucky when living there; and then it was a choice between out here and the South Carolina coast.

If we connect on the lake we can exchange big words over beers http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif.

I used to date a gal that was an admissions officer for Pomona College...part of the Claremont Colleges. I'll second that about highly educated people that can sometimes be so pompous and have over the top egos. But most were pretty cool. Met a lot of the professors and staff at the parties and mixers. Pretty interesting crowd. Peter Drucker was by far the most interesting of all.

I went to college and got a performance degree in music. I'm not nearly as smart as the rest of you but I enjoy what I do. Both my parents are musicians and since I was about 12, that's all I wanted to do. The funny thing is, the degree doesn't do shit for you. Nobody cares if you have one in the industry, only if you can play or not. Fairly cut throat business, but you meet alot of interesting people. And unless you're amazingly talented or very lucky it's hard to make great money. Oh well, it supports my boating habit. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
