View Full Version : outboard/jackplate work
who can give me some ideas on someone that would do good work on an outboard. i've tried all seasons and will never take another boat or recommend them to anyone! someone had mentioned offshore marine but from the signs on the outside of their building they do not work on evinrude motors. someone else had mentioned another place in BC but i can't remember the name of the place. Keith, if you happen to read this post feel free to jump in with some advice. if you're willing to, i may see if i can arrange a meet with you for you to look at it. any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Being in the business I might be able to recommend someone in town to help with your outboard or jackplate. Perhaps I can help you myself depending on the job. What exactly do you need done?

the main problem right now is the jackplate. i'll have to get you all the particulars on the make when i get it back this saturday. the plate will move up but slowly slides down on its own. it's an old system, i'm assuming from around 1983. the company that made is still in business but no longer makes jackplates or any parts the one that i have. i've been told to switch to mercruiser pumps and hoses but at a price of around $800+. for that kind of money can't i get an entire new setup?
by the way, SWEET ride propman!! that's a 'stream right? vegas, HST? what's the top speed?

That was fast. Yes for $800 you can buy a new plate, actually I am a CMC dealer and can get you a "blem" for about $650. I may be able to fix your's, it may be simple as a seal or an "o" ring. Probably best to call me 564-7502

uh oh, sounds like STVkeith might have some competition! i like the price of the blem. from what i'm told i would have to totally change the whole system. i don't really have any idea. i don't think i'll try to have anything done to it before the 3rd of august that way i know that i'll have my boat available for the photo shoot. anytime after that i'd be willing to drop it off to you. just let me know what works for you. thanx for the help.

James Cool we will take a look at it and you can make a decision on what's best.
I plan on going to the photo shoot on the third of Aug. It sounds like fun, the river is well suited to my boat, I will probably leave from Willow Beach unless it's a big wind
Kevin
thanx for the help STV and propman. i'm sure between the three of us we'll get something figured out. propman, i don't suppose you work on saturday's do you? from what i've read and heard the cmc is the way to go as far as jack plates are concerned. do they come with the pumps and all the necessary hardware?

James-
The beauty of the new one's are that they are self contained, all thats needed is a switch and wiring in the boat.
Kevin
that's soundin' better and better all the time. of course assuming i'm going to need a new one. i'm going to pick up my boat tomorrow so i'll be able to fill you in on a bit more of the details on who made the thing etc etc.

Better jump...here's one for $200! http://forums.screamandfly.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16397
as tempting as that is (can't really beat the price!http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif i think i'm going to hold off until you and/or propman get a chance to take a look at mine. i'd like to keep the system that's already there if it's fixable. i just got my boat back yesterday FINALLY. it looks like the sticker on the one of the cylinders say it's made by Marine Engineering in Orion, Wisconsin. i've already called them some time ago and was told they don't make any parts for it but i'm still hoping someone can work some magic on it. i've got another question for ya. i drained the old fluid out of my lower unit today and refilled it. am i supposed to put some type sealant on the top plug? if so, what do i use? it looked like it had some kind of silicone/locktite or something left in there when i took the screw out. any advice? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh.gif

On OMC drives, the plugs have plastic sealing washers and require no additional sealing goo. Make sure you have a good one, and you're good to go.
Kevin
so i take it the phillips head screw that's in the top plug is not the correct piece that's supposed to be in there what's good place to get outboard parts (fuel filters, plug wires, lower unit plugs, etc etc)? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
